Yeah, I know. Big PITA.

You're probably better off tracking down Andrew Wimhurst's "Down Under Deals" lecture notes. They're cheaper AND contain the correct description (the Revelations write-up has you get the break in the wrong place).

I know all the above - I think. But, sorry, not one of them comes close to my Card Shark and the Four Gamblers - from a layman's point of view - done with any deck at any time. HARRY LORAYNE.

Try my EASY ACE ESTIMATION (Nocturnal Creations, 1997) which is an easy handling of Marlo's Miracle Aces. My handling has a couple of nice 'extras', too. It's also on a couple of my Dvd's.

Eric Mead's "Three-Piece Combo" from Tangled Web is the most well-constructed, entertaining, and deceptive Ace-Cutting that I have encountered...

Though you ask for two-handed sequences, I will add that I think Vernon's "Cutting the Aces" from Stars of Magic -- with the placement taught in Vernon Chronicles -- is one helluva piece of magic, imho...

I've just revisted Eric Mead's Tangled Web book, and I am much more impressed this time around. (for some reason, I was completely underwhelmed the first time I read through this - maybe the hype did it in - but now I'm really enjoying it). Also, with the Zarrow issue in Genii this month, I've applied the move to the 3 Piece Combo trick talked about above. Very well contructed. I've been skipping the last red/black separation phase at the end and with just the first two phases (and the Zarrow)- you look like a real stud with cards.

Another great ace-cutting routine is "Marlo's Miracle Ace Cutting" on Bill Malone's Here I Go Again dvds (vol. 1). NO breaks and yet you repeatedly cut to the aces.

I've been working on 3 Piece Combo for a couple of months now and it's the best! Great trick, great control of the aces in the second sequence.

I personally love the third phase with the Red/Black kicker. It almost seems the point of the routine, but who am I to argue with the Unexpected Visitor! :)

You're probably right, Jeff :) I think it may be me more in love with the method than the effect (but the effect is strong!) After all that false shuffling and the sneaky use of the crimped card, the red/black kicker IS probably the point . . .

Jimmy Grippo did an excellent routine:
The four aces on top of the deck.

Shuffle and don't disturb them. False cut one or two times, then shuffle the aces to the bottom.

Then cut the deck with the right hand grabbing the top half of the deck by the thumb, second finger (on the long ends). The first finger is in the middle of the packet, pressing a crimp in the entire upward packet that is placed on the table.(The ends are waved up and the middle is inward) The packet in the left hand is dropped onto it.

Pick it up and show it on all sides with a little pressure to hide the crimped half.

Place it into the left hand as if doing a Charlier cut. The packet will open at the crimp. Stick your thumb in the cut and pull out the ace with a little friction. The ace will turn face up and then let the pack close.

Reapeat this for the final three aces. Then give the pack a little bend to take out the work.

Please excuse the lack of technical writing ability.
This was a master in Jimmy's hands.

A version of cutting the aces using the Charlier one hand cut is also published as "TV Aces" in Million Dollar Card Secrets by Frank Garcia. Enjoy.

I published a version of cutting to the Aces using a Charlier. I think it was called something like Automatic or Mechanical Aces. Possibly in CardMagic.

The Jennings book is poorly written and the descriptions can't be trusted because of that. However, at the moment I'm not in a position to rewrite that particular routine.

That's an intriguing comment. The implication is you might someday be in such a position. Might there be a 2nd "improved" edition of that book someday under the Kaufman & Co. banner?
That'd be great.

No, I won't rewrite that book. However, things that are actually wrong do get a shot at having a correct description written in the upcoming EZ and Tough books. In the EZ book, for example, I've redescribed the Optical Add On and a few other sleights that are just plain wrong in Classic Magic. Ditto for a few tricks. Will have to do a bit more of that in the Tough book.

Isn't there a Charlier-cut-to-a-crimp version of cutting the aces in Close Up Card Magic? I've already proven that my memory for the contents of this book is not perfect, but I do recall three cards are dealt on each ace, and then each packet is lost in the deck before the aces are cut out with a Charlier cut.

Nobody has mentioned Guy Hollingworth's "A Gambling Routine" (pg. 181 of "Drawing Room Deceptions", & on his VHS tape "Routines"), which starts with a non-taxing and VERY clever cutting to the Aces:
The Aces are together in the middle of the pack and as part of a gambling demonstration, Guy keeps cutting to the same crimp, to produce one Ace after another, all the while saying misdirective things such as (paraphrasing) "this time a little deeper...there's an Ace...this time, not quite half-way...there's an Ace..."

Brilliant.

Vernon's handling without Double Undercuts, where the Aces are inserted into a fan, was been published in (perhaps?) The Sphinx many years ago. Or am I thinking of an Ace Assembly?

Pg. 155 of Lost Inner Secrets Vol. I has The Unadulterated Cutting the Aces, which uses single cuts. The book says it appeared, minus a few touches, in the January 1965 Genii.

One of my favourites has always been Martin Nash's Telstar Aces. Its a one handed Charlier type production.
The Aces are plucked out one at a tim face up by the thumb of the same hand.

Richard Kaufman wrote:"The Gambler's Aces" (which is unfortunately not described properly in Classic Magic) is by far the closest thing I've ever seen to the mythological Scarne routine where he cut the Aces from a shuffled deck.

The 75th anniversary Gift Bag is amazing! Scarnes Ace Cutting, donated by Ray Goulet, is just one featured item among a leather portfolio 'grab bag' of A material, and oh so many pockets to peruse in. Very Impressive!
