I'm trying to hunt down some really different effects. Not cards or coins or sponges. They don't have to be off the wall or wacky, just unique and ignored.

You may like to check out Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment books, for off beat effects with pot plant leaves, soft drinks and tin foil to name a few.
