What makes a master, a master?

After a very interesting conversation with a new friend about some excellent magicians and still buzzing from seeing Volume One of Visions Of Wonder for about the tenth time last night with another magic buddy I decided it's time to take this question public... because frankly I'm not sure I know the answer.

Like art, pornography and bar-b-q I'm not sure what it is... but I know it when I see it.

It's easy to tell a master magician. They're completely composed and in their element (or so it seems) when they perform. But what exactly makes a masterful magician different than the rest of us? What makes them different from the merely excellent magician?

One thing I noticed with Tommy Wonder is that there was a very convincing sense that while some of the words he spoke were script, some of the words were being spoken for the first time. I'm referring to his presentations for Magic Ranch and The Tamed Card where things happen and the magician has to deal with the unexpected. His delivery is entirely believable.

Your thoughts?
