Frank Simon's Versatile Card Control Book/DVD

Postby Jeff Eline » March 24th, 2003, 2:12 pm

I just bought this Book/DVD this past week at Mike Caveney's lecture. I haven't had time to go though it with any detail yet. But in just skimming through it, it seems like a great book.

For those that don't know, the book is a reprint and the DVD just shows the slieghts, performed by Earl Neslson. No tricks or presentation on the DVD.

Does this arrangement appeal to those that dislike videos? You still have to read the book and you cannot 'ape' the presentation. While I'm a fan of instructional videos (heck, it's my business), I kind of like this new set-up.

Jeff:

I bought this book at the Castle immediately following a mini-lecture on the book given my Earl Nelson and Mike Caveney.
I didn't get the DVD, so I can't comment on the value of the book/DVD combination. But I can tell you that there's an easter egg in the DVD that shows a clip of outtakes.

The book itself is terrific.

I did find the out-takes. I accidently clicked on a button as soon as I popped it in.

The book/DVD combination sounds like it might be the best way to go - I'd like to get my hands on this combo

Versatile Card Magic and the companion DVD are two of the best purchases I have made in a long time. Lots of great material. I like the book/DVD format offered with these items.

A lot of the Camirand videos were the same - an accompaniment to the book with just the sleights performed- e.g. the companion video to Ouelett's Pass Book.

I thought it was a good concept - but since each sleight was only performed once, the "companion" bit only amounted to < 5 mins of tape. The rest were some items based on Gary's Genii colums. I wore out my rewind button trying to watch the actual pass bits. What would have been much better was to show the sleights repeatedly and from from a variety of angles - I don't know if that happens on the new Nelson/Simon DVDs.

Rgds,

Ian

Ian,

The DVD does have multiple angles of the slieghts. From the Audience's POV, from underneath and I believe from the magician's POV. The DVD format also allows for easier slow motion and repeat viewings.

Well, I had to click on everything in the main menu: up, down, and sideways before I found it. I don't know what it has to do with an "easter egg" that a few people have refered to. Maybe I just don't get it. Click on everything you can on the screen.

"What is an "Easter Egg"? - The term "Easter Egg", as we use it here, means any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations. They could be in computer software, movies, music, art, books, or even your watch. There are thousands of them, and they can be quite entertaining, if you know where to look...."
