Bob Swadling Changing Card

Postby erdnasephile » November 16th, 2017, 7:17 pm

Anyone know where I can get a Bob Swadling Changing Card? (JB Magic does not and will not be carrying these). Thanks!

Or if there is another preferred gimmick that will allow a card to change while throwing it in the air, I would appreciate that reference as well. Thanks!

I have one someplace. Why don't you email Bob and see if he still makes them?

Hi, RK: I searched for his email on line, but for some reason, I can't find it. Do you happen to have it?

Hmm...very interesting--I saw this as well:

They both sound like you've got to be a bit handy in making them, but not too terrible.

I've read the reviews: anyone have any experience with the above mentioned products to recommend one over the other?

Would this work for your purposes?

I saw this Swadling trick on eBay a few years ago. I believe that a good top change can get the job done. The gaff is best used only if the effect cannot be duplicated by sleight of hand.

A topchange? That might get the method rolling... but alone is not enough manage that startling midair change - of a card which is shown front and back both before and after.

Yep--don't forget to hand the card to the muggles after that startling change. A souvenir of the magical experience they can perhaps keep?

Best to buy these by the bulk...

? What are we disputing here? Have you seen what the delayed action cards look like in action?

That's a direct visual change. Not the same as an implied, "spooky" or card change done in-transit . Please - we've both read what was available in the 1970s on Hofzinser and Roterberg - and all due credit to Bob Swadling for a generation of fine magic items. ...and yes you probably want to do a BoTop to manage the "after" as well.

@OP I have his torn and restored card item - so I know of Swadling's card gaffs. ;)

The muggles will be burning your hands like hawks when that gaffed card lands back. It better be a good BoTop change for the clean up.

Agreed - any rational person would be wondering about the mechanical card if done that way. And agreed there are other ways to do non-visual changes that are deceptive. The Marlo item where you have put a coin in the pack then wave your hands over the pack comes to mind. :)

But the OP wants a mechanical card ... I wish him luck with his routine.

I'm not familiar with the Swadling card, but would a flap card/acrobatic card do the trick?

Hi Bill, part of your question is addressed in the videos linked earlier. That approach brings up the other question (posts above from Leonard Hevia) about how to set/cleanup after mechanical marvels - so the routine is deceptive.

I recently got my hands on one of these gimmicked cards. It really is a thing of beauty, which leads me to believe that Erdnasephile is a connoisseur of the good stuff. The illusion is perfect of the card changing in mid air. This probably works best in a multiple selection routine where one card is forced. At one point in the routine, the wrong selection is pulled out of the pocket and changed to the correct one with a spinning toss.

No time for examination of the card as the routine moves right along.
