Charlie Miller's published works...

Postby Christopher1979 » October 20th, 2017, 10:18 pm

It is evident beyond any doubt that Charlie Miller was in a class of his own when it came to the things he could do with a pack of cards. I am fascinated with the almost mythical presence he holds among many card workers that were around to see him at his best. I know that Ricky Jay was partly taught by Miller. It seems unbelievable that so little of his work is in print? or did he just keep his secrets to himself? If any of you have stories you could share about him or point me in the right direction regarding any published works of the great man i would be very grateful!.

Chris

Hi Leonard,

Thank you very much for the link and book suggestion. I would be interested to see what type of Second deal Miller did!

Magic Inc. has published some booklets by Charlie Miller. We have two of them as PDFs. You can check them out here https://www.lybrary.com/charlie-miller-m-134097.html But I am sure Magic Inc still offers them as printed booklets. I assume you know that there is also a good amount of him in Genii magazine and some articles in Magic magazine.

Thank you!, yes, i am aware of the material printed in Genii and such. I was interested in the way he preformed his Seconds, Centers and Bottoms along with any of the other "Gambling type" sleights

More Miller fodder for you Chris: An interesting Charlie Miller card trick post on the Double Deal card magic blog:

https://doubledeal.wordpress.com/tag/charlie-miller/

It helps to own Karl Fulves' The Pallbearers Review to locate the effect though.

Thank you Leonard, i think i will have to get a copy(s) of Pallbearer. I think i am more interested in his variations of certain sleights rather than the actually effect.

I have these Miller notes in my library:

The Magic of Charles Earle (Charlie) Miller, 1961, compiled by Frank Csuri
Charlie Miller Lecture Notes 1966, Magic Inc.
Charlie Miller on the Card Index, Magic Inc.
A Lecture on Impromptu Magic, no date
Miller's Mutterings, no date

If anyone knows of others I'd be interested in knowing.

Miller is listed as author in the Busby Jennings book because those tricks were taken directly from Genii.

I believe but might be wrong that the item you are talking about and the Csuri notes are the same thing, but I could be mistaken. Where did you find that there are only 6 known copies?

I just quoted it from - https://www.lybrary.com/charlie-miller-m-134097.html. Are those Csuri notes the same that was auctioned off by Potter and Potter earlier this month? think they made something like $29,000.

The Miller Notes are but 1 of 6 different sets of notes in the csuri files, that were passed around the underground in the 60's and 70's. There are the Miller, Vernon, Dr. Daley, Paul Fox, and I can't think of the other two sets at the moment. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A complete set of the Csuri notes was auctioned off in the August Jeff Busby Potter auction. That set contained the magic of Vernon, Miller, Woodfield, Daley, Ross, and Fox.

A large collection of correspondence between Miller and Ross was also auctioned off. This cache of letters was the basis for Csuri' s notes on Miller.

The Jacob Daley Csuri files were published as the Dr. Daley Notebook, and a portion of the Faucett Ross material was eventually published as well. I don't know what book that would be, perhaps The Magic of Faucett Ross written by Ganson?

Most of the material in the Csuri notes has been published, with the exception of the Miller material and the Paul Fox material. Aside from the items he published himself, or chose to let others publish, Miller did not want his material published, which is why it has not happened.
