Winding up the deck

Postby El Mystico » May 1st, 2017, 11:27 am

Who should be credited with the idea of 'winding up the deck'? - riffling the corner with the left thumb, while the right hand does a winding motion?

I actually read at one time who invented it. The trouble is that I cannot remember where I read it, when I read it or who the inventor was. All I can tell you is that it is definitely in print somewhere. I have been doing it for years and years. It does get a smile but not much else. Still, anything is better than nothing. It all adds up to the amusement.

I just read about how this was originally done with a watchwinder gimmick and this person had made it easier by using the riffle.

Now I just need to remember where I read it. Will find it when I get home and post an update.

In Volume 1 Number 5 of Talisman is Roger Rittner's "The New Wind-Up Deck". In the description he states that he can't remember who originally showed it to him but has found few people who had heard about it. That issue is dated April 3, 1970.

That's it! And I can't swear to it and I will check later since I own the book in question but I swear that I first came across it and Coon's name in the Bert Allerton book. I wish I had the energy to go find the book and check it out right now but I just can't be bothered.

I just checked! Yep! I was right! Page 54 of the Bert Allerton book. I KNEW I read it somewhere! The first time I saw this was performed by Jon Tremaine but later I also came across it in the Bert Allerton book. I read there that George Coon invented it but it faded from my memory which is normally very good where book extracts are concerned. However when Joe mentioned George Coon it all came back to me.

I think i first saw this done my Michael Ammar in the late 80's. He does it very well. He makes it sound so real. There is a real knack to making sound right.

I learned this is the early 1960s. Cannot remember where, though. Unless it's in ECT?
