Shell for Johnson Products "Chinese Coins"?

Postby erdnasephile » April 14th, 2017, 2:41 pm

Hi!

I own several ungaffed Johnson Products "Chinese" Coins (the black brass ones in half dollar size--new style)

I was wondering: does the shell of their "Hong Kong Half" fit over the regular "Chinese" Coins?

If you have the "Hong Kong Half" , is the shell deceptive and of good quality?

I have reached out to Johnson Products but am waiting for an answer.

Also, if you know of a shell set of half dollar size "Chinese" coins you would recommend, please let me know. (If you wish to sell one, even better! ;) )

Many thanks in advance for any info!

PS: This is a really good routine with this set of coins:

(and it's in print)

Just found out: no shells that fit the regular Johnson Products Chinese coins currently exist. The "Hong Kong Half" is a cut down coin and shell apparently. (I suppose I could buy 4 of the "Hong Kong Half" sets, but that could get a bit pricey).

Anyone own any of the other sets out there they would recommend?

Erdnasephile,

I am no authority on shells. The only one I currently have is part of the Silver, Copper, Brass, Transposition set I purchased from Johnson 20 years ago. However, I have repeatedly heard and read good things about this custom coin guy. Not sure what you'd be looking at in terms of cost, but you might want to contact him to see what he can do for you by way of expanded shell(s) and what he would charge.

Thanks, Alfred. I'm familiar with Mr. Lassen (and own a few of his pieces), but have never handled his "Chinese" set. I was wondering if they were really better than some of the other sets around. He's really busy and it can sometimes be quite a bit of a wait to receive items since they are handmade.

Tango makes a large variety of coins of all kinds these days so you may want to see what they have. I believe they have a website so that would be the best way to see their complete line.

Ok I have his China set. As with all things Lassen they are most lovely. They handle perfectly.
RFA Productions yeah... It is cool stuff.
