I dug out and performed Ken Brooke's Locked last night and all went well until the end and it was revealed that the answer was in the key fob the spectator was holding. Problem was - I think I was the only one in the room that new what a key fob was.

I love the premise of the trick and having the spectator hold the answer in their hand with the key is priceless, but I need something better - something more modern. In the current iteration a corner of a card is inside the leather fob sealed in plastic. Any ideas?

For those that don't know, Locked was a Roy Johnson variation that Ken issued after Nemo 1500 when he could no longer get the wallets.

I recently called Steven's Magic and they appear to be some distance from revving the Ken Brooke stuff - at least that was my impression.

A "key fob" is basically a key ring. More precisely it is (generally) the piece of leather or other material that is connected to a metal ring that actually holds the keys.
Qickest example I can come up with is when you go into a place that makes keys....circular racks hold hundreds of key fobs.

You are correct about the key fobs. If I was doing the trick today, I would remake the prop stating that they should look at the "key tag". Locked is a great trick and I have used it in the past.

Even great tricks need to be updated!

Likewise your car keys usually come on a ring with a tag showing the dealer and manufacturer.

The car alarm gadget is also like a key fob. It's just that we don't use that word (fob) often here in America.

Have a look at where they make car keys... you will see lots of them. :)

Jonathan, most hotels in the US today use an electronic card key system. It saves money of re-keying locks as it can be done on a computer from the front desk and without a locksmith.

It's really put a crimp in doing key bending at trade shows as all the room keys are plastic cards!
