Kinda invisible card

Postby Jonathan Townsend » August 24th, 2016, 4:07 pm

Close up card question: Has the notion of a card with an invisible face but a regular back been explored and if so where?

Consider a face up card on top of a face down deck. A wave of the hand and the card is invisible. But if you turn it over it has a back. Turn over and no face to be seen. Turn over and there's the back. Add to a small packet of cards, count four face down to the table ... turn them face up... just three faces.

This came as a goof reframing of the color change and Don England's card that changes sizes when you turn it over. Then an idea to follow up with a different take on the invisible palm where it's more about the card being invisible. So a DB card handles the turnover displays - and a fan gaff handles the packet display. But that's just method - I'm asking about the basic premise. Face up - invisible - face down visible.

What do you think?

by invisible do you mean blank? or are you conveying invisibility in another manner?

This sounds similar in concept to a coin routine Tim Glancey had. He said the coin was invisible on one side. It was a spellbound type routine but he switched the coin for nothing while pretending to turn the coin over and mimed holding the invisible coin.

Yes, invisible as in the card in the invisible palm type approach to the open travelers... miming a card that can't be seen. There's nothing to see - the turnover on the deck is similar to Don England's item. The card packet display sequence is about like the monte trick buy you're not switching so much as directly using the gaff to show an additional card present when face down.

Little update - there's a moment at the start of Don England's item "shrink" where a card is shown to have a regular sized back and a miniature face - one handed display - that might communicate the underlying idea.
