Cards with pocket question

Has the use of a card with pocket containing another card (think cut down coin with shell) where you pull out the nested card from the side been explored in print - if so where?

If you have a camouflaged notch in the shell gaff card so your thumb can slide out the insert... makes an easy/quick handling and dirty approach to false count tricks.

What do you think?

Agreed the basic gaff is used there, usually with jumbo cards - though not to set up a false display count for the entire packet. As far as I know.
Imagine the (Baker?) setup where each of the gaffs was a different color and itself held two or three odd backed cards.
Added as a single card... then in the course of displaying the color changed cards - the extras are reinserted into their holder gaff. Thinking poker sized cards... and wanted to check if the principle was being explored beyond that application.

side question: Why is the Hofzinser work dated 2002? The Fischer/Sharpe card magic book was around before then.

It is dated after the publication date of the book that contained this particular citation:

So, for Hofzinser, it would be about 1850 or earlier. Conradi also sold them before 1900, along with many of Hofzinser's tricks (and variations thereof).

The pocket card is also used for the Diminishing Cards. As the deck is re-fanned in diminishing sizes, the appropriately sized mini card is removed from the top card/back of the fan and placed on a table as evidence. This card has a pocket on the back to hold about 3 mini cards of various sizes. The late Alan Shaxon explains this on his card fan video which is included in the L & L World's Greatest Magic DVD on card fans.

Since, I believe, the Diminishing Cards originated with Robert-Houdin (and he used a regular deck), and R-H worked in roughly the same time frame as Hofzinser, the use of a gimmicked set of Diminishing Cards using smaller sets of cards in pockets would postdate Hofzinser's pocket card.
