A question for the collection hive-mind:
Is there a reference in print for the idea of controlling a card during a Vegas-style card wash? It's usually accomplished by keeping a finger or thumb on the back of the card as the cards are moved around.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Card-wash Control
I'd be interested in knowing about a reference to this myself. I don't recall ever seeing it described as a specific technique.
Something that comes to mind though is Malini's Card Stab which uses this technique. Versions of the card stab were described in Greater Magic, Stars of Magic, and Malini and his Magic all using the move in question.
Anyone know of an earlier description of the technique?

I vaguely remember some reference to it in the Matt Schulien book by Phil Willmarth but I may well be getting it wrong. Something to do with forcing a card. But yes, I have certainly seen this in the Stars of Magic and the Malini book.

Didn't Steve Freeman's report on Susie Cottrell at the LA History Conference mention that she used this method?
And Lennart Green's Rosette Shuffle, while not directly on point, is certainly related.

Re: Card-wash Control
In my account of Steve's talk, I could not recall who Steve attributed the force to. Richard Kaufman added into the article that Steve mentioned that what she used was an "advanced" version of the Schulien force. Richard and I were working off memory and notes when we wrote up the account of that incredible talk. So I guess the point here is, it could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Re: Card-wash Control
Earliest reference I know of is the Schulien force, which necessarily includes a control. I'm not sure the description of the Malini routine in Stars really qualifies. As I recall, it's little more than the statement that you "follow" the card as you move it around. Not that I've checked, but that's my recollection.

It appears that I was correct. But of course that is not surprising. I am psychic and we know these things.

There may be something like this in Martin Lewis', "Martin's Miracles:" see "A Falsified Spread Shuffle," pp.33-35. He refers to Paul Curry's book, "Paul curry Presents," and says that Jack McMillan and Charles Nyquist used it in the 1940s.

The Shulien reference was the one I couldn't recall. Thanks everybody.

Indeed. And I was the first one to mention it. Some of us lead and some of us follow.........................................

Hi Michael,
Do an Ask Al search for Simon Lovell in Genii. I think he had something like this when Jim Patten was maybe doing Magicana or his own column, ¿'The Locked room'?.
Thanks again for your help the other day.

Re: Card-wash Control
I forgot to mention that Steve Forte has a card wash control of the top four aces of the deck on his GPS bonus videos near the beginning. He doesn't explain it but if you slow down the playback to super slow motion in VLC player you could pick it up.

Forte describes it in either his poker protection book or the casino protection book. Look under card wash or scramble, also check out his description of "weeding."

Karl Fulves describes it in one of his Slydini double volumes, I think "The Best of Slydini and More." I asked Slydini about it and he denied that it was something he ever did!
