Slydini's Helicopter Card

Postby Richard Stokes » December 5th, 2015, 8:04 am

Thanks for bringing this wonderful trick to a wider audience.
I came across the Slydini clip a couple of years ago on youtube when I was searching for Cavett's interview with Marlon Brando.

Even when closely watching the Slydini clip several times, I couldn't see the move.

I chased the technique up in the Slydini book.

Is there a contemporary version of this trick?
I don't remember seeing one.

On the Perverse Magic thread of this forum (September 1, 2011) I suggested ending this fine effect by having the selected signed card produced from my mouth.

When I watch this, I'm completely blown away. It's one of the few card tricks I have deliberately decided not to look up the method for because I don't want to spoil it for myself. Perhaps one day my self control will break down, but for now, it's still real magic for me.

It’s not so much the “method” but the “method” is a good lesson in “misdirection” or using one’s natural movements – natural to that person – to cover what is done.
Slydini’s misdirection is excellent here.

I don't know how he did it.

That's why he was a master magician.

I am glad to be here other than the green place..

Slydini was a genius. And I am very interested in his work.

But I never liked this trick. Or at least - this performance of it.

Also - Jonathan Townsend mentioned The Jerx earlier. Jonathan? Did Andy ever discuss this trick or Slydini? It doesn't ring any bells with me.

And as always when I mention The Jerx. Do check out Andy's blog. He is the best thinker in magic today. And the best creator.

In fact his most recent post details one of the strongest tricks you can do in magic. And as he said - it is a shame he doesn't charge 750 bucks for it - otherwise people will overlook it.
