I saw Gilbreath last night at the Castle, and asked him to explain his famed Gilbreath Principle. He explained what it does, but he's a very smart man, and was unable to dumb it down enough for me before he was swept away by another friend.
Can anybody explain it for me? Or point me to a source that will explain it? Not the mathematical proof, as he was threatening to do, but the practical effects.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
I don't remember who, but a while ago, someone sent me a super nice PDF that explained it graphically. I'll look for it and send it off to you if I haven't deleted it already.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
If you can track down any copies of Profile magazine Peter Duffie wrote a superb series on various principle, and the Gilbreath was in there.
If you are looking for applications try pretty much anything by Maven. From his red lecture notes that happen to be next to my desk I would recommend The Mockingbird and A Clash of Symbols.
Take care, Ian

Chris - I too would like a copy, if you don't mind. Or perhaps if you find it difficult to send it to everyone who asks, probably you could upload it on your site and those of us who have suscribed to it can go there and download it. Hey you could use this as a way to lure more people to your site, by giving some nice freebies. ;)
Just a thought.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
Dang it! I'm still looking for that PDF.
But until (and if!) I find it, here's a link to a pretty good explanation.
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~roy/magictalk-w ... reath.html
Second post by Jim Morton explains it pretty well I think. No math, he just explains by example.
The same gentleman was also the one who created the PDF that I now seemed to have lost. If anyone has Jim Mortons e-mail address, he would have it for sure since he created it.

I don't think there's a problem with posting Jim Morton's email here, as it is available to anyone who searches the Magic Talk member list:

Hope that helps some of you.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
In Duffie/Robertson "Card Conspiracy Vol. 1" there is a chapter on the principle and a very clear, simple, explanation. The book is recent and should still be available. It includes effects using the principle.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
Ben Harris has a terrific trick using the Gilbreath Principle in OFF THE WALL, called (I believe) "Invertz".

Re: Gilbreath Principle
Hopefully, I am not revealing too much here, but the new routine by David Williamson utilizes this principle in one of the phases of the routine. He lists a couple of sources in the manuscript for the Gilbreath principle.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
I don't know if you're revealing too much, we'll see if anyone complains. Frankly, I think your post should motivate people who are interested in Gilbreath, but might not otherwise purchase the manuscript, to buy it.

Re: Gilbreath Principle
The Card Magic of Nick Trost book has a short and simple explanation.
Recently the wonderful hypnotist/magician Chuck Mignosa kindly attempted to explain the principle to me. My eyes glazed over immediately... Think I'll stick to practicing my Top Palm
