Gaffed card - what to use for?
Gaffed card - what to use for?
Hi All,
I'm unsure of how I can put a couple of gaffed cards to use
a 5 of diamonds with missing centre pip
and a 7 of spades (7 pips) with one 9 of spades index (two index card) and the other a 7
never really seen any card tricks that use these so am at a bit of a loss

The Five of Diamonds could be used in a "Moving Pip" effect.

You've got cards that are part of other tricks and are useless on their own.

Well, not exactly useless... perhaps useless together. The mis-indexed card could be used with a peek force to vanish the Nine of Spades for any number of "thought of" card to impossible location.

A lot
but not all of them include tricks that need the use of gaff cards
the ones that did were still read but tricks that require gaff cards were skipped due to the lack of, well ...
...gaff cards

Yeah Vernon's Picking of the Pip came to mind with the 5 of D

Yes, thank you
Peek force gaff card (obviously make sure you know which value)
fan deck so their card disappears...
...and reappears in their chicken kiev?

It should reappear under their dinner plate, or some other absolutely impossible location that doesn't make it gross. You could do Card in Orange I suppose, but you really need either a signature or torn corner for that, and you don't want to run your gimmicked card each time you do the trick.

i hope you know the chicken kiev thing was a joke
the card produced in impossible location wouldn't be the gaff in the idea i've already posted as the gaff is peek forced and left in the deck
Re: Gaffed card - what to use for?
was thinking you could force the 4 of D
have it lost in the pack
read specs mind and bring it to the top
actually 'incorrectly' bring the 5 of D to the top
colour change 5 of D to the gaff making central pip disappear
now colour change again (after moving actual 5 of D) from gaff to 4 of D with different coloured back
as if I can't quite get it right i.e not good at mind reading, produce wrong card, right amount of pips wrong index, right amount pips right index wrong back colour

There's a Marlo color change (in the Tears book I believe) where you snap a card to table with a finger flick. It would be amusing to flick a 'diamond' off of the card via a Han Ping Chein sort of action as you did the change. Hopefully it would appear the five changed into a 'four' because you knocked the center diamond off and into physical reality.
(probably more work than it's worth...)

There's a similar Latta item in print in the Kaufman magazine.

These gaff cards are pretty closed to an effect by Marlo described in New Tops. He does a visual change or a vanish.
Jonathan, are you speaking about Heartless by Geoff Latta in Richard's Almanach?

@Philippe Yes to the Almanac item. Page 84 in the collected version in the Latta Issue right before the ice cube coin vanish.

Yes, there is a Snap Change in MARLO WITHOUT TEARS that is ancestrally tied to two other changes along these lines: THE VISUAL RETENTION CHANGE that appeared in HIEROPHANT 5-6 (1969-70) and a snap change by John Cornelius. Instead of "Picking Off a Pip," you FLICK it off.

Couldn't find it in Marlo Without Tears. Is it "A Change For The Better" (page 14) in Card Finesse?

That's the one Leonard... my bad.
Jon, thanks for the reminder of the Latta issue of the Almanac. Gotta revisit that collection of work...
