Card trick with one double backed card?
Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
"Bone Appetite" (a Cannibals Themed routine) by Aldo Colombini also uses a DB card.

Most of the tricks devised using double backed cards will require either 1, or 52.
Sam Schwartz's "back flip" used two. Bob Farmer sells a trick that uses two.
The trick where you deal down the pack face up, face down, face up face down uses a half pack as do cheek to cheek and Dingle's color changing pack. The trick that came from Paul Curry's but used that rotating stand had (if i recall correcly) three.
Other than that version of Vernon's item that Mike Close and I explored what uses 52?

*edit - okay there's one where you toss the pack into the pool/pond and the selection is the only face up card.

With 26, you can of course do a version of Triumph.

What's the name/inventor/publication with the version using half faced-half backed/regluar backed cards?

Possibly Dean Dill and Mike Weber, but Zach Allen also published a similar effect and method in an ebook called Ignus Fatuus a few years ago.

Thanks Ian,
The Dill/Weber item is (as best I recall) an "out of this world" product. The item I have half recalled spent a paragraph describing the fuss of makign the first of the required cards then went on to reassure the reader that making the rest of them would less of a travail. Zach Allen? Okay good for him I guess.

It seems that this idea dated back from Burling Hull with a trick named "The Ghost Card" in 1910. See M.I.N.T., volume 1, page 195 or New Tops, December 1965.

Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
Thanks Philippe,
I'd be astonished to find that the principle of divided cards (Hofzinser?) had not also been applied to the "twisting the aces" or "your thought of card magicially reversed" plots since Hull and DeLand were making such cards :) . There was a trick in magic kits that had you show a spread of spot cards, replace the card at the face with another value card and then fan the the cards again to show they too have changed. Early wildcard?

DeLand's "Inverto" is the early precedessor of all of these tricks using double-backed cards.
The first split back (half face/half back) that I can find in the US is Henry Hardin's "Peerless Monte=Cristo Cards" which was marketed in December 1908 and manufactured by DeLand. It is the earliest version of the "Tossed-Out Deck." The entire deck except for a cover card consists of split backs.

Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
Richard, did DeLand market to folks who could do some sleight of hand? Asking as just those mutiple print cards could be treated as one/many (same for faces) to permit a named number of cards to fly from one packet to somewhere else - the MO being a secret 180 of one or more of the gaffus cards so they show 1 instead of many for the vanish and an index or just multiple outs for the appearances :)

Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
There are also some effects where you create what they call an "impromptu double backer". Do those count? Derek Dingle's All Backs routine (from his Stars of Magic video and also in Richard Kaufman's Dingle book) springs to mind and have used it as well.

Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
l*, IMHO the OP asked about what options are available with the single DB card he obtained with his pack of cards. The principle of faced cards, whether used as a single DB or with the entire pack to swap out the cards in play (as in the early ace assembly trick) might be just outside the 'what to do with a db card) but, again IMHO, inside the "what to do using the DB principle".
Derek Dingle's color changing all backs certainly used a db card ;)

OK Jonathan just don't chop my head off!!
Ha ha ha, just kidding!! :D :D
I know, but I just put it as an option. I remember Nick Trost has many packet tricks and one of them (one of the few that I have) has a DB. As soon as I get home at night I'll look for it and tell you the name.

Re: Card trick with one double backed card?
The trick is called "a packet of backs" by Nick Trost. I checked the info on the net. On a side note, Yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of Mr Trost's death (I was reminded of this info on a website I found while looking for the names of some of his packet tricks). I like his magic and I salute him and say a prayer from the bottom of my heart, wherever he is. Viva Nick Trost!!

All of DeLand's tricks were marketed as requiring NO sleight of hand whatsoever. And they didn't.
