Off the top of my head:
JERRY SADOWITZ
ROY WALTON
RICKY JAY
STEVE FREEMAN
BILL GOODWIN
STEVE FORTE
JUAN TAMARIZ
LENNART GREEN
GUY HOLLINGWORTH
DANI DAORTIZ
All the best,
Joe
PS There are not many of the 'greats' around these days. Which is a shame. I guess Roy Walton is one of the last around. Anyway - I would add Karl Fulves to my list - but I feel a 'card stars' list should be a reflection of creativity, performance ability and skill. So - obviously - Fulves would do well on 'creativity' - but I am not sure about the rest.
Anyway - I remember seeing versions of this sort of list from as far back as the 1940's (I think?). And I remember those lists containing names like Stewart James and Stewart Judah. I would imagine those guys as not being so hot when it comes to 'performance' and 'technical' skills. So - if we stick to the original criteria to these sorts of lists - then maybe Karl Fulves would make my list after all.
PPS One of my dreams is a 'THE COMPLETE KARL FULVES' compilation... Maybe one day!
PPPS Someone mentioned Ascanio earlier. But he ain't alive anymore. So - I don't think that counts...
PPPPS I just looked at the earlier lists. And I agree about Jack Carpenter, Jim Swain and Paul Harris. I love their work - and they would certainly make a 'personal Top Ten'. I just wanted to try and pick a list which reflected a more general overview of world card magic - as opposed to my own subjective tastes...
Card Stars for the 2010's

PPPPPS: Interesting list - sorry I couldn't make it. HL.

Hey Harry,
No offense intended. I really respect your work - I have all your books etc. But more than that - reading all 20 volumes of THE APOCALYPSE magazine has being one of the magic highlights of my life. So much interesting material in those magazines. My other favourite of yours is the BEST OF FRIENDS series... Here's hoping for a fourth volume!
All the best,
Joe

I think it would be extremely difficult to make a list of only 10, particularly if we are going to include those outside the US (which the earliest lists did not). I suggest a list of 20. That seems more reasonable.

Richard Kaufman wrote:Let's be a little pickier in the people we name. George Schindler is a great guy and a fun performer, but in no way is he a "card star."
That part of my post was in answer to Jonathan's earlier query about guys who hung around Vernon in NYC. I was fairly certain that Schindler was among the pack back then, and that I wasn't certain whether Sol Stone or Ron Wohl were there too. Sorry for the confusion.
