Gluing Cards Together-A Miracle Product

Postby Bob Farmer » January 10th, 2011, 12:00 pm

For the last several months, I have been experimenting with various ways of gluing cards together. I've tried ten different kinds of spray adhesives (too messy, or don't work), adhesive sheets (too thick, too time consuming, not accurate), rubber cement (messy, inaccurate), heat adhesive (time consuming, must be trimmed) and glue sticks (too brittle, don't hold).

I have now found a miracle device that works so well, I cried real tears when I first used it and lit a candle in honor of the card-gaffing gods.

Here it is, the Xyron 2.5" create-a-sticker:

You put the card in, crank it through and it comes out the other side perfectly coated in adhesive. You peel off the backing and place it on the other card. It's flexible and permanent -- and you can tell your wife she can use it for "scrapbooking."

I found it in Michaels.

How's the snap of a DF or DB card assembled using that adhesive?

Very good. I think it's because the adhesive is applied so uniformly.

Bob: Thanks for the tip!

PS: The weirdest thing about that link was the listing for a "permanent refill".

When I saw that, I thought: "If the adhesive roller is permanent, why would you need a refill?"

I then saw they had a "repositional refill" and realized what they meant.

Duh! :)

Bob, did you try to glue split cards together? Replacing the DMT method? Or is this primarily for gluing two regular cards together?

Bob, thank you VERY much for this tip, your timing is perfect! I'm working on a jumbo card trick in which I need to stick cards together, and nothing I tried was working well.

Greg:

They have a larger version that is 5" wide. I'm not sure how wide a jumbo card is, but they might have something even wider.

I've been using a Xyron 850 for years; the adhesive cartridge for sticking cards together and the laminate cartridge for making custom printed cards (not gaffed cards, but for packet tricks).

I've used it to laminate jumbo cards. Made a set of Parallax cards (including one with reversed center), that have lasted for several uses.

I even used the magnetic cartridge to create fridge magnet version of the Bermuda Triangle trick that was in that other magic magazine late last year.

850 was discontinued some years ago. Looks like the 900 is the successor.

The other thing I like about the product, is the Mystery Science company name -- Xyron of the kingdom of Zak in the galaxy of of Zork the Unfathomable.

Great tip. I was JUST ABOUT to borrow a dry mount press for some jumbos. Will try this for sure. Thanks!

I called the Michaels near me and they have it in stock. :)

So I'm off to do some shopping. :)
