Have you seen the way it looks when the inventor does it?

It doesn't at all look the same when you do it. Perhaps that was Jonathan's point?

The card needs to rise more times. You need to set the stage and make sure that the conditions are understood. You are putting the card down very close to the bottom and if you watch closely you can see it slowly rise a little at a time until it makes its way to the top.

If someone watched your performance and didn't know what was supposed to happen, I think they would be somewhat confused.

I do not agree with your statement that "the card needs to rise more times." I think that it is in fact, better if the card rises only two times, because the card travels 'up' further; thus, making the effect more visual. Hopefully I make sense; if not, maybe the following video will help illustrate my point. (my performance of the trick) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wmnsuAMBTc&fmt=18

Also, what is this supposed to mean? "If someone watched your performance and didn't know what was supposed to happen, I think they would be somewhat confused."

What he means is: your "trick" has no context, no set up, no build. It is not a trick, it is a demonstration of a move.

In Kosby's hand, Raise Rise is a logical and visually, dramatic conclusion to an experience he has crafted for his audience. You are just shaking some cards. The effect is unclear and you are not getting the impact this sequence can deliver.

Of course, these are presentational issues, not technical.

You do a hard move well. For that you are to be congratulated.

Now - make us care.

Nice job 3ialwi. Michael Weber once told me he thinks it's better with just two hops as well.

You have a good idea Matt when you make the first rise go near the top. If you do the trick with two hops, I think that clarifies the effect.

I'm glad you guys like the trick.

Here is a very nice take of Tony Chang doing this in "two hops".

Good job, 3ialwi

You were showing us the move and not your routine. I understand.

Mr. Kosby himself gave you high marks, you should feel proud

Good luck

Great performance, but that was three hops, not two.

One more hop, please. It lets the audience appreciate what is happening. Otherwise, it's just juggling, and over before it sinks in.

Nicely done, nonetheless!

Watch again / more closely. He makes the motion three times, but the card only rises twice.

On that last rise, simpler to tip the deck to the side after and let them see the face of the card - no? Makes the initial placement and final reveal symmetrical.

He does it three times. I don't want to expose anything, but look for the tell-tale signs of the Ambitious Riser.

Yes, I see the tell tale pinky movement.

So perhaps. But if so, the first rise is neigh imperceptible to the point that it seems kind of pointless.

Re: Matt Richman's comments above:

I much prefer Tony Chang's rendition. The card rises to two positions in the deck before ending up on top. That, to me, is the best approach.

The original video that started this thread shows one jump and then directly to the top. That's o.k., I just like it the way Tony did it.

As far as pinky movement, obviously that can be covered with more jiggling of the deck, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the move which is to show the card moving upwards with very subtle motivation.

How many laypersons would burn the pinky anyways?

Matt, what I meant by the comment about laypersons seeing this for the first time is that the performer simply didn't set the thing up well enough (in my opinion) and it was sort of rushed, which to a spectator can cause confusion. Confusion isn't magic.

Hey, he asked for opinions, I gave mine. Feel free to disagree.
