Ring N String

Postby Steve Vaught » February 11th, 2009, 1:45 am

Greg Wilson put out a video years ago called "Ringleader".

With the video came a ring and string.

I have tried to find this particular flat velvet string in the

hobby/craft stores around my area without success.

Does someone have a lead on where I can find this SPECIFIC

KIND of string?

Thanks

You might try searching (online?) for velvet "ribbon" -- these things are not usually called "string."

Craft stores won't have it. Fabric stores will. Try asking for "velvet cord" or "velvet piping." Sometimes piping has a lip, so be careful. Go to a good fabric store and go to their "notions" section.

A few years back I was able to get some from a local Walmart store. Again that was a few years back and don't know if they still carry it.

Most craft and fabric stores no longer carry this. However, I have found a source on line that carries it. Here is the link Mendel's

Wow, I just checked Jo-Ann's Fabrics (where I go, well, now went I guess) and I'll be dipped if they don't have it anymore. It's only been a year or two since I bought a bunch (it was only a couple bucks a yard). What's this world coming to? So thanks Marty for that great link! It's a keeper!

While we're at it, does anybody know where to get the string for the trick where you separate the strands in the middle and twirl them into fake ends? I've looked at every store that sells string, yarn, thread, or cord within 10 miles of my house, and am still looking.

I have a piece that is exactly what I'm looking for; cotton string, white, 4 twisted strands (has to be an even number, which is the biggest problem I've come across). Unfortunately I only have about a 6-inch length, and I can not find a store that sells it. I even tried a company that sells yoyo strings, which are usable. But I want something thicker, and there's a hard-to-describe quality of the string where sometimes the twisted fake ends have a loop at the end of them which kills the illusion.

Anybody with a source for this kind of string please let me know.

Hey Pete,

I got a whole ball of the string you ar elooking for at my local walmart. Any walmart should have this but it is in the hardware section with the pliers, hammers, screwdrivers, etc. Don't even look in the fabric section.

There may be a supply of it in the kitchen section as well since it's the same thing as you would use to tie up a turkey, etc.

I think it's called twine in the hardware section. If you can't find it I could pick some up for you.

By the way, I read an interesting routine for this in a Bill Severn book at my local library years ago. He basically made 8-10 fake ends and bundled them together so they looked like many 'bits' of string. He told a story about his grandmother always saving string and never throwing it away. It eventually changes into a full solid string.

I've never seen anyone else do more than one set of fake ends.

Every now and then I get reminded of how good Bill Severn was. Thanks, Ryan.

I agree, Jeff, Severn had some really great presentational ideas buried in his books.
