This is an unsolicited endorsement/notification that Meir Yedid has just re-released the 5-disc set of Martin A. Nashs work at an unbelievable price: $99.95 for the five discs. Yes, I have an unabashed bias for Martys work, but I think this is a marvelous deal. Check it out at Meirs site: http://mymagic.com/nash.htm

While I agree on the above, I like to point the student to another set of Martin Nash DVD's also avaiable from Meir: "THE VERY BEST OF MARTIN NASH 3-VOLUME DVD SET" for a mere 89$.

This is a re release of VHS originally produced by Videonics begin of the 80' and the 3 DVD's include the 6 original VHS. What I find specially interesting in the original Videonics production is that they did not choose for the now traditional format: trick/explanation/trick... Here you see the complete act of Martin followed by the explanations, this is specially interesting for a performer like Martin who always thinked in term of acts and not tricks.

Just my two (euro)cents.

I completely agree with Mr. Van Aken... the FORMAT of the original series was excellent (including the "Bonus" effectes at the end of each tape). I transferred my tapes to DVD long ago and they are constantly a source of inspiration ( and a great companion to his "Trilogy" of books)

How is the quality of the DVD transfer? Is everything clear enough to learn from?

Yes; Both Meir and L&L have the masters, so they're not just copies of copies of....

Thanks, Dustin-- if you were to recommend one set or the other in terms of material and quality of Mr. Nash's performance, which set is the best?

That's a good question. There is more material on the 5-disc set, but Marty was past him prime--though still quite good--when he made those. That being said, the quality of the shoot is a bit better as well versus the old Videonics set. But that 3-disc set was shot about 20-years earlier. Marty was technically better, but the camera work, etc. isn't quite as good. I think I'd recommend the 5-disc set over the 3-disc one; but I have both!

I love Martin Nashs card stuff.
He was a very good entertainer with just a deck of cards.
I do several of his superb gambling effects.
Knock em dead magic, sure.

Dustin, did the delivery of the material evolve, over time? I have the Bob Read material, and there is a definite progression in the Knife-through-coat sequence, for exemple. Did Mr Nash's material evolve in the same fashion?

Having seen at least parts of both, and Martin live a few times, I'd make this distinction.

If you want to watch him perform the older videos may have an edge. If you want him to teach you, he has twenty years more experience doing that on the newer tapes.

Dustin, you have them at hand. Does my recollection match your reality?

Bill is correct and yes, Michael, there is some evolution/refinement to technique on some of the work on the newer DVDs.

Nash is so good, he combines so well magic thinking and sleight of hand artistry.

I would like to implant his brain in my head!

I've just bought the 5 disk set, which is available at a stupidly low price in the UK.
I'd never seen him work before; and Martin's style of magic is 100% different to mine.
But I'm absolutely loving what I am seeing.
I don't suppose I'll learn any of the effects, because his emphasis is so different from mine, but watching him perform is a delight.

Amen to that. He was also an extremely nice gentleman.
