Racherbaumer's column renamed?

Why did the name change from Flibbertygibberty to On the Slant? I really like Flibbertygibberty, which stands out and sounds interesting. On the Slant isn't a bad name, but it doesn't have the distinctiveness as Flibbertygibberty.

I agree, but lost the argument with RK.
Of course, I'm partial to unusual but APT or germane words.

My father legally changed his last name from RACHERBAUMER to ROLF. He argued that it was shorter and easier to pronounce. I never agreed.

My argument was that RACHERBAUMER (pronounced ROCKER-BOMBER) would probably be mispronounced and misspelled, but otherwise people would remember it.

I was friends with Marlo for over 25 years and he always called me ROCK-EN-BOMBER. He never got it right.

Maybe we should take a poll re the name of the column?

Onward...

Jon,
I particularly liked the old title...I know Richard didn't like it.

You are right about people remembering certain names. (I still have problems spelling your name..."Rockerbawmair")

Here's a poll to see who liked what:

I don't even have the December Genii yet, so I haven't seen the title change. As a language lover myself, I have nothing against unusual and apt words, though I must say that "On the slant" is nicer as a name for a column; "Flibbertygibberty" was fine too, but sounds a bit made up.

As a side note, I was interested to discover the correct pronunciation of "Racherbaumer". I don't have a lot of contact with magicians (even less since I left England six years ago), so I have to make up my own pronunciations of American magicians' names. Having studied German, I always pronounced "Racherbaumer" in the German way, all the while thinking that in America it would probably be something like "rakker-bow-mer". Not sure how you get "rocker-bomber", but I'll bear it in mind for the future.

Other names I always mispronounced and was corrected on when I visited America (capital letters indicate stress):

Bruce Cervon (should be "serVON", not "SERvon")
Michael Ammar ("AYmar", not "AMMar")
Ken Krenzel ("krenZEL", not "KRENzel")

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, and I hope Mr Racherbaumer and the others don't mind me discussing their names like this.

I think that the name of Jon's column should be changed to 'Discombobulations'.

How about Racherbominations?

Or Fulvegebulations?

Or FlibbertyGeritol?

Or perhaps Discombobuwhatthehell?

Or maybe even My Name is Jon Jacob Racherjingleheimerschmidt?

Huh. That's funny. That's my name, too.

:D

Lance, it's not fair to make an old man guffaw with a mouthful of coffee.

Eh. It was just a bunch of Flibbertygibberish.

Cheers,

In a related note, I heard that Eddie Duchen-Catchen-Cammen-Toesanary-Casanova-Samma-Camma-Wacky-Brown, fell into the well. Fell into the deep, dark, well, actually.

More on this story as it develops.

As many hipsters, flipsters, and finger-poppin' daddies have long known, "the flibberty-gib" is the catch phrase from the great (Chicagoan) Ken Nordine's word jazz classic, "How Are Things in Your Town." Now that RK forced JR to change the column name, I can go back to using "'da flibbertygib-bop" as a magic word in some of my own sillier routines. Another reason to be grateful to Richard.

In this day and age of magic history - We don't want anything made up or original

I'm sorry, to disagree with Genii's decision to change the name of Mr Racherbaumer's column -

Isn't "Parallax" and "On the Slant" very similar?

Dave

If you name the column Rasher-bow-wow then no one will ever pronounce Jon's name correctly again.
