My Show Name (Tom Stone's challenge from his February column)

Postby Jim S. » January 17th, 2010, 6:18 pm

Per Tom Stone's challenge in his "Lodestones" column in the February issue I am posting my [current] show name.

The working title of my show is, "What Color Is The Sky In My World?"

I picked that from among several I developed in a brainstorming session:
The Evil That Men Do
The Result Of A Wasted Youth
Assorted Foolishness
Damaged Goods
There Are No Vampires Here
Mephistolean Rhapsody
Shine On You Crazy Cubic Zirconia

I was looking around for the topic starter for this and was a little surprised to find that I was it.

I have to say I love Tom's writing. He makes me think, and plumbs magic to a depth I wouldn't have considered were it not for him. (Saccadic eye movement and magic? How cool is that?) He also does this in a language other than his native tongue - and, I found out after complimenting him on Facebook, one he taught himself.

I plan on following his plan to its fruition, and will stick to his deadline of March 18, 2011 to have a show together. (Damn. Now it's in writing. On a public forum.)

Thank you, Tom, for your insightful writing.

Jim

I'm really looking forward to reading Tom's articles on putting on a show.

For what it's worth, my show title this year is 'I said I wouldn't do this again', which is an in joke of massive proportions.

Take care, Ian

Interestingly enough, I finally got around to reading his December Lodestone last night, I too am looking forward to doing this as well.

And yea the Saccadic Eye article was my fave from him the past year.

" A Study of Magic" by Retep Nap... my characters name is Retep Nap, which is Peter Pan Backwards. He is a "Dark" Peter Pan Character. A character i came up with years ago as an alter ego for the experimental band i have been with for ten years...

He is quite adept with a pack of cards, coins, and some other small items that i tend to favor. i have a dialogue 90% written and am working in the magic a little at a time.
i have given myself limitations in order to simplify what i would have to carry, as of now, i can fit everything into my pockets, and have no restrictions to where or when i would be able to perform it.

Tom, I love reading your column! And I am very excited to launch a theatrical show.

Titles ideas:
"The Treachery of Images: This is not a Magic Show"
"Secret Powers" (not a very imaginative, but it ties in with a script I have in mind)
"The Interesting Visitor"

Nice. This one wants a father for the lost girls? Came back to avenge his abandonment by his parents? Intstead of being raised by Tink he was raised by Hook? Just what did this one leave in the Darling childrens' bedroom? What would Nana do?

My two favorite columns episodes in Genii last year were the Roberto Giobbi columns about the Deck Switch and Tom Stone's column about the 'science' behind (mis)direction. (The Saccadic eye movement thingie.)

A great challenge has been issued by Tom.

I toyed with some names for this 2011 show

'Soire fantastique' (in remembrance of Robert-Houdin's shows)
'Mental Breakdown' (with, obviously, a mentalist theme)
'A Louvain seance' (Louvain, (actually Leuven, Belgium) is the town where I would perform the show)

But I finally decided on (drumroll please)

"THE ALZHEIMER REMEDY"
It is to be a mentalist show starting from the (unproven) scientific thesis that excercising your brain can keep Alzheimers at bay.

Ciao for now

P.S. If traffic becomes heavy on this thread, perhaps this should become a special forum branch?

Have you read Dr. Ryūta Kawashima's book, Train Your Brain: 60 Days to a Better Brain? It was the inspiration for the best selling DS game, Brain Age and relates directly to your show theme.

I'm happy to see so many taking up the challenge!
...which also makes me slightly terrified, as I'm not exactly confident that I'm the best guide for something like this.
But, hopefully, chances are that we all learn something, myself included.

At the end of my next column, I recommend John Carney's new book "Magic by Design". I believe that it is a useful book for this project, so check it out at: http://www.carneymagic.com/store/index.html

Jim S: Several good titles! It might be that "What Color Is The Sky In My World?" is a tad too long to say when ordering tickets, and to fit on a poster. Can you figure out a version that is one word shorter?

Ian Kendall: Good title. Can it be made one word shorter?

retepnap: The title "A Study of Magic" strikes me as somewhat generic, compared with the complexity of the character you describe. Can you find an alternative that is more descriptive?

Geoff Weber: All three suggestions are good. I especially like the first one "The Treachery of Images", as it seem to hint that you cannot believe your eyes. Maybe it can be made even clearer?

Hansel: The title "iMAGICnation" is cool, but slightly generic, in the sense that it is unclear what it promises. More brainstorming?

Ozymandias: Good title!

I don't think so. After 18 years of doing shows in the Fringe (of which 14 were full one hour shows) I said I would not be taking part this year. I made a point of telling everyone so I couldn't back out of the decision, but when I said I would be doing a one off show, a friend suggested the title.

Grammatically, the only word that could be cut is the 'again' at the end, and this would completely change the meaning.

Take care, Ian

I meant, is it possible to construct a whole different sentence, that says the exact same thing, but is slightly shorter? :)

I really don't think so. Plus, it's a quote from Allin, adding to the layers of in jokes.

Hi

I think names in latin can be a great option for those of you who are trying to get a cool and atractive title, there are a lot of movies and plays that use the power of ancient words from latin that people may still understand. The perfect example can be found in the spells Harry Potter uses, those spells are derived words from latin and they sound very cool (expecto patronus, levicorpus, episkeyo, lumos,.....)

I know english does not come from latin, but you can still find a lot of words in latin that may resemble something in your language.

This is a title I just made up and you can take it if you like it: "Magia omnia vincit" - Magic always wins
"Magus omnia vincit" - The magician always wins....

best regards

There's loads of Latin in English. The rest is either German or some Celtic dialects (if you realise that other Romantic languages like French and Spanish are in the mix).

Some of English is from French, acquired during the occasional times in the past thousand-odd years that the French ruled over England. During these periods, the French were the ruling class and the English were the workers. This shows up in several words for food, where the English-based word is used for the animali.e. cowand the French-based word is used for the food derived from that animal, i.e. beef (from the French boeuf), because the English were tending the cows and the French were eating the beef.

Many folks can't manage to post well formed statements in plain English. IMHO Latin or any other language with nuance would be wasted here.

The appeal of Latin is that many English words have Latin roots, and so made up Latin or Latinate names will (may) seem somewhat familiar and authentic.

I have a show scheduled for April 24, 2011 and will be following Tom's column as I prepare for it. I feel obliged to point out that it won't be in a theater but on a platform in a church hall. Nevertheless, I'm excited about the performance. Also, I'm enjoying the sense that as I progress toward my goal, others who are also participating in Tom's experiment will progress toward theirs. Magic is largely a solitary undertaking. What a rare opportunity this is to share the experience--even partially, remotely--with others.

I've really been enjoying Tom's column.
Moreover, I have somehow taken his advice in advance of his article. About a year ago I submitted a show to a local theater and it was accepted for the 2010 season. I've been performing pieces of the act for sometime, but the show will be about double the length of some of my previous performances. The name of the show is "Magic and Misdemeanors"
I just posted details in the Buzz Forum, but have included below as well. If you are in Boston . . . would love you to come see the show!
Cheers!

I had decided on the title "The Treachery of Images" even before Tom added his vote of support, which will just give me added confidence to trust my instincts from here on. This title has really helped me define the type of show I will be doing and through researching the art of Rene Magritte I have found a lot of inspiration for things such as what my costuming will look like: http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/~thurston/fis ... nOfMan.jpg (although I probably will not keep the apple there the entire show) :)

to the kind of material I will be performing: http://www.artscenecal.com/ArtistsFiles ... itte1.html

*Writing has begun
*Props needed are being aquired
*I have signed on the a services of a musician who will compose original music and perform it live during the show. (she plays the accordion)
*I just had a very good meeting with the programming director at an arts center and they really liked my pitch and would like to host my show in the new theater they are constructing. (They are building it on the site of an old prison. the guard towers are still in place)

Not wanting to toot my own horn too much, but anyone in this thread who has access to MUM might like to look out for the Basic Training column for June. It's a ups and downs look (mostly downs) at how I put on shows in the Edinburgh Fringe for 18 years. I discuss all the things that I did wrong, a few that I did really wrong and one or two that were total disasters.

I like to think of it more as a 'learn from my mistakes' thing than a catalogue of catastrophe.

Back on topic, I confirmed a slot for this August, to 'I said I wouldn't do this again' is at green light :)

Take care, Ian

In continuing with Tom's homework assignment here's some of the titles/phrases I came up with:

How to start your own religion
Getting too big for my britches
Magic in 3-d
The trick that fooled a guy who vaguely looked like Houdini
This trick cost me 24.95
You can trust me, I'm a Boy Scout
When ambition hits the wall
The art of procrastination
Things you can do with a degree in art
Technicolor lies
The funniest thing ever (you really had to be there)
How I can tell if I'm awake or dreaming.

Some of these I have definite tricks in mind that they could go with.

I came up with this title a few weeks ago and it seems to be sticking in my mind.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.

When I mentioned this to David Regal, he hadn't heard of the expression, and I thought thought that if someone as well-read as David hadn't heard of it, that was a negative. But when I mentioned it to Shawn McMaster, he hadn't heard of itand thought that was a positive.

The full quote, which I think would make a good first line of the show, is "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics." And so the show will endeavor to demonstrate all three, etc.

For years the conventional wisdom attributed this quote to Benjamin Disraeli, the former British Prime Minister, based on the writing of Mark Twain, who popularized the expression (and is sometimes credited for it). But current scholarship indicates that Charles Wentworth Dilke is the originator. In other words, the commonly accepted version of the quote is a lie.

Just throwing this out there. I have been scripting a show called "Midnight at the Oberon Cafe."

What happens after Midsummer Night? What if the fae all went out after, and the hapless barkeep has to deal with drunk sidhe?

He reffers to Middsumer's Night by Shakespeare. Oberon is the King of fairies. The play ends with the wedding of three human couples and reconciliation between Oberon and Titania.
Maybe the magic show is about "what happened after the play" ... after the weddings? all the fairies and mischievous beings get drunken.

The Oberon cafe sounds to me like an irish pub ;)

But let HexTheDoombunny to explain him personally.

Andres is correct. In the final panel of Neil Gaiman's Sandman issue 19, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Puck's final lines are illustrated in such a frightening manner that it stuck with me, and I began to wonder what happened after the event's in Shakespeare's play. I had an image of various faeries and mythical creatures sitting in a pub or restaurant carousing and generally making the barkeep's life miserable. I began wondering how he would cope, having worked many a third shift with less than sober individuals, and I then saw him as the "hero" of the narrative, at first baffled (much to the amusement of his customers) by the magic of the faeries then, after a bit, starting to take advantage of the magic, to turn the tables on the faeries. At dawn he wakes, finding his experience nothing but a dream of midsummer.

Ambitious. Possibly even arrogant. But in the course of scripting bits and pieces, researching other bits and pieces, and generally trying to build a cohesive, coherent narrative I learned more about dramatic structure and how to apply to other performances. Also had a great bit of fun doing effect design with an artist friend of mine. Someday I may even let some of the ideas out in public (a few are still being potty trained). :)
