Garcia Flys Under Radar!!

I have been with Genii for about four maybe five years. I always go from cover to cover in each magazine. When I see tricks discussed or taught in magicana, it's either a complete,no way, or that's nice it just doesn't fit me.

Well, that was not the case in the Dec. issue. As soon as I read Daniel Garcia's trick I knew THIS IS FOR ME! This is a "WORKERS" kind of trick.

I'm surprised no one has said anything about this.

Brief explanation and why I like:

1. You talk about the thin line between past, present and future. You set one card on the table. With deck of cards in hand, volunteer picks a card and signs it. They place it back in deck. You talk about how the future came at the beginning, you turn over the card that has been on the table...IT'S THEIR SIGNED CARD!!

2. There are sooooo many reasons why I like this trick.
a. There is NO SET-UP. You can start from a shuffled deck in use. A big plus for me!
b.You have a BUILT IN THEME that is interesting and somewhat intelligent, not...ok let's pretend this card is a monster and this card is blah, blah, blah or expecting everyone to know what a good "hand of cards" looks like.
c. NO GIMMICKS, PURE SLEIGHT OF HAND. Just a personal preference. I believe this trick is a wonderful lesson in the craft of magic . You employ skill in a card reverse, double lift, get- ready, break, double under-cut, buckle, timing, misdirection, eye-contact, and the gamblers move. This trick is everything that I like about magic. It's simple and to the point.
d. There is really no angle problems at all.
e.Your volunteer keeps the card for helping...great marketing!

I am saying all this because I perform it now four nights out of the week in a restaurant setting. I have everyone from a group of adults, clans of "emo's" , or questioning ten year olds. When I turn over their signed card, there is an amazing stunned silence(two beats) THEN you hear "what tha!" or "How tha!" ....as a performer it's SOOOOOO satisfying.

So THANK YOU Daniel for being so generous to release not only a great trick, but one that could be served greatly as "basic training" in the art of sleight of hand magic!

Steve,

I agree. I think Daniel posted a version of this quite a few years ago in the infancy of the MagicCafe, I have been doing it ever since. However, with the presentation given in Genii, it escalates the effect immensely.

Donny - you're correct. DG posted an explanation only on the Cafe a few years ago titled as 'Timeline'.

Under Radar seems to have been tweaked a bit and of course now has the time-themed presentation.

I know this is slightly off-topic, but it needs saying. Daniel Garcia is one of the most generous, nicest and talented performing magicians I know. He is a member of all the local clubs in Houston. If he isn't on the road or performing, and there is a meeting, you can count on him to be there.

He performs at our meetings regularly. He helps the beginners. He is also generous with his material.

He really deserves all the success that he is receiving.

Just saw this post the other day. It caused me to look up the effect and to start playing around with it. Haven't tried it yet; still working on it, but I have a couple of suggestions for folks who are using it or may want to try it out.

1. If you have the spectator select their card from a face up deck (no reason not to since you see the card anyway) it is a simple matter to reverse the top card (botom of spread) while closing the spread.

2. When you do the swing cut of the top half of the deck into the left hand do a one handed fan with the left hand for the replacement. This offers a bit of cover and I think draws the eyes of the spectators to the left hand.

Just a couple of ideas that I wanted to share. Looks like a great effect and I hope to get around to trying it out before too long.

I'd like to thank whoever started this thread. Not only is it an amazing trick, but the issue itself is worth its weight in gold. The Johnny Thompson interview kept me riveted. It was a reminder of what was for me a landmark book. If Vernon and Thompson were turned on to magic by Erdnase, it was Hyla Clark's World's Greatest Magicians who gave me the bug. That turned me on to magic, and over the years a lot of people I met had the same fondness for that book.

Anyway, thank you, Anonymous.

(BTW, your name pops up all over the place on the internet. You have a lot of free time, don't you? Did not know you were into magic as well...)

Hey Michel,
I am also one of many who have a great fondness for Hyla Clark's book. That book gave me the bite which I have never recovered from, a wonderful book I treasure. One of many great memories is when Vernon signed my copy at a convention many years ago here in Wichita.
Peace,
Lee

I think I agree, Daniel posted a basic version of this effect in the inital stages of the Magic acfe and was worth a look even then!!!
