HOUDINI CLUB OF WISCONSIN - YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Summary: The Houdini Club of Wisconsin is granting up to ten (10) free youth “Junior” registrations for its annual magic and variety arts convention (www.houdiniclubofwisconsin.com).

This award provides the winning applicants with admittance to all convention magic shows, contests, lectures, informal jam sessions, Saturday night party, and Sunday afternoon awards lunch banquet. The 77th annual magic convention is August 28-30, 2015.

Youths are encouraged, though not required, to enter our stage, close-up, and/or escape contests; these provide the opportunity for developing stage presence and confidence while gaining valuable constructive and friendly feedback on performance and presentation skills.
The award also includes a complimentary pass to any non-magician adult guardian who is designated as the chaperone to accompany the youth(s) to the convention. The pass includes chaperone’s entry to all of the above items except for the Sunday banquet. Banquet tickets must be purchased separately.

Ticket(s) for the Sunday banquet must be purchased by the chaperone as well as any other person who enters the banquet room and does not have a full convention registration. Travel and lodging is not included.

Who may apply: Youth(s) from ages 10 through 17 years of age, who are magicians or are genuinely and sincerely interested in the art of magic or its kindred variety arts (including but not limited to dramatic acting, comedy, ventriloquism, juggling, mind reading, escape artistry), and who have their adult guardian’s consent.

How to apply: Submit a written application essay (can be in letter form or in email, preferably with Word document attached), stating in 500 words or less: (i) why he/she is interested in magic or its kindred variety arts; (ii) what experience the applicant has in performing magic or variety arts; and (iii) what the applicant expects to gain or achieve by coming to the Houdini Club of Wisconsin convention. Send the application to Big Guys Magic either by regular mail (to Big Guys Magic, 145 Park Avenue, Pewaukee, WI 50372) or by email to thebigguy@bigguysmagic.com . The name, address, phone, and email of each youth and each accompanying adult guardian must be included at time of application for this scholarship. You may also contact Charles Arkin at carkinlaw1@aol.com, or call him atg 513-936-8446 for more information.

Each application must include a brief letter signed by the parent/adult guardian which specifically (a) allows the youth to attend the Convention, (b) agrees to be financially responsible for any non-registration charges/costs incurred by the youth participant, and (c) designating whether this parent or a different authorized adult will chaperone the youth to all convention activities. Apply now for this great event!

When to apply: Applications for the 2015 convention (to be held on August 28th through August 30th, 2015, at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wisconsin) will be accepted through June 30, 2015, and winning applicants will be notified by July 15, 2015.
Why: The Houdini Club seeks to promote magic and youth development through this program.
