I have an idea but won't ruin the surprise in case I am right.

Re: Magic-Con 2011 Schedule
I disagree (as expected) with Ruben's comments about the Pass vs. the Side Steal. My general experience has been that people who do a Side Steal well feel it's better, and people who do a Pass well feel that's better.
And ... nice to meet you again, Ruben!

I don't do either the pass or the side steal, and so I can quite objectively say that the spread cull is better than either.

Richard:
I'm impressed--it takes real guts to give this type of lecture! (I've been disappointed sometimes when a few famous names have demonstrated the pass--lots of comments about bad angles, etc. True, perhaps, but it's a always a bit of a downer when reality doesn't match reputation.)
Do you normally stay in trim with the pass, or do you have to get into training for a few weeks to get to exhibition speed?

Re: Magic-Con 2011 Schedule
I haven't had much time to practice, and unfortunately it showed in my lecture in the sense that more of the passes should have been near invisible. Teaching is not a problem, but it's easier to inspire someone to take the long hard road with the Pass if you can do one that's invisible.

Re: Magic-Con 2011 Schedule
I saw Richard's lecture and I can say that many of the passes were remarkable or invisible or both, but where his lack of practice (may have) showed was the consistency. He might have done a given pass, say, 10 times, but only maybe 6 or 7 were invisible. So I'd say he did show enough to inspire people, but also enough to warn people just how hard the pass is to make a regular part of your arsenal.
But the next generation is already hooked. One of the highlights for me was when Dave Williamson brought a 13-year-old kid out of the audience. Dave hands him the deck and says "shuffle;" the kid did a nice shuffle. Dave says "okay, Mr. show off, do a top change;" kid did a nice top change. Dave says "Do a pass." Without batting an eye the kid did a classic passpretty quick too. Dave immediately said "Get the hell off the stage." It was hilarious.
