Long ago in NYC on Saturdays, with cups

Postby Jonathan Townsend » January 12th, 2016, 11:58 am

Once upon a time long ago in NYC, at Reuben's and Tannen's there was a gentlemen who'd bring his set of cups. There were a few folks who brought their cups - Willie the Brooklyn Wizard among them. Let's discuss Willie and his routine another time. This is about another guy. He was well dressed, usually wore a hat. And he'd be practicing a routine that involved stacking and unstacking the cups. He was using metal cups. His routine involved stacking them into a stack of three on the table. When he was in the group, even at the back of the room you could hear the metal "clomp, clomp, clomp".

Does anyone here recall the guy? Well dressed black guy. What cups was he using? And any recollections about the routine he was working on?

Thanks in advance,

hahaha that might be his grandson. Someday a magician will get balls under those cups in the fast pyramid stack. :)

Any ideas on the older black gentleman who was with us for years working on his three cup routine?

Sounds like Julian Stanley. He was a black gentleman who liked to work Central Park on weekends doing coins and cups and balls.

I was thinking Julian Stanley, too. I have an old video of him doing his cups and balls at Ring 26 new members night around 1991.

We were talking about Reubens at our current Saturday meeting place Cafe Rustico this past Saturday and Wesley James and Sol Stone seemed to have the best memory.

I think - though you should check with Wes or Sol - that the gentleman's name was Stanley but I am not sure and don't remember his last name.

Did anyone happen to record Willy the Brooklyn Wizard's routine? He demonstrated what happens when you know a that well trick by doing...start at the start to find the place. Did he or his routine get published mention?
