Orson Welles in "Black Magic", in which he plays Joseph Balsamo/Cagliostro.

I'm sure he is equally as riveting as Penn in http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0089964/

(not meant to be a dig on Penn, just found this movie on Amazon Prime last night and was surprised to see Penn in it. He is in the opening scene after the titles/opening credits. )

It's not "Lady from Shanghai", but hey. Welles did not know how to not be entertaining.

Welles directed Lady from Shanghai. He did not direct Black Magic.

It's pretty well established that Welles directed his own scenes (at least) in Black Magic. See the discussion of the film in Orson Welles in Italy, by Alberto Anile, translated by Marcus Perryman.
