I suppose that depends on how you define "great". If you mean "successful" then the answer is "yes" by the measures of both popularity and financial reward for his work. If by great you mean "versatile" or "able to disappear into the role" then only a few actors would meet this criteria.Arnold Schwarznegger is an incredibly successful performer, starred in innumerable films, made millions upon millions of dollars, is incredibly popular... but would you call him a great actor?
By the same token, what is the criteria by which we judge a magician to be "great" or "good" or "successful"? Is it a measure of technical skill before his peers, or his ability to entertain laymen? Before you can say someone does or does not measure up, you need to understand the nature of your "yardstick" and then ask, is it applicable in this situation?
Arnold Schwarzeneger may never give Rober DeNiro or Dustin Hoffman sleepless nights over his ability to get roles that they want, but he seems to be able to entertain a lot of people. And no one goes to an Arnold Schwarzeneger movie expecting to see "Death of Salesman".

It ain't the method, baby, it's the magician.
Watch the faces of JAP's guests. Therein we see, and maybe, and perhaps, we know why he wins the trophies.
It's easy to debate one method over another, this way over that...but in the realms of persona and personality , the nice guy finishes first, as does Mr. Palmer... again and again and again.
I wish I had his magnetism.
