It will be interesting to see how this compares to the "Wicked" musical and series of 4 books with their take on the Wizard - or to the tv series "Tin Man". Thanks for the heads up.

L. Frank Baum built a beautiful home in Hollywood which he called "Ozcot." It was long ago demolished and replaced with a bland, characterless apartment building.

Hollywood has many such examples of the building-up and collapse of imagination, and it's easy to see how the very same fate could have befallen the neighboring Lane Mansion, had not some sort of magic-minded people stepped in and caused it to survive and thrive in a new form as the Magic Castle.

I have to believe that L. Frank Baum visited the Lane Mansion when it was a private home. Hollywood was a village, and the Lanes and Baums were neighbors, and of the same social strata, and civic-minded good-deed-doers.

It's unfortunate that original star Robert Downey, Jr. bailed--he had the required touch this would have needed. His replacement, James Franco, is a heavy-handed actor. Franco was the weak link in the otherwise interesting Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and he stank in Spiderman as well.

There is a very interesting synchronistic bit with the old Wizard of Oz flick dubbed to the Pink Floyd album, Dark Side of the Moon. It only works through the first run of the album and then the juxtaposition of the Pink Floyd music and lyrics to what is depicted on the film no longer matches or coincides.

The set-up to do this manually is as follows:

(1) Have the Dark Side of the Moon on play mode and paused, cued and ready to go
(2) Play the Wizard of Oz with the volume turned all the way down and wait for the MGM lion
(3) This is important: The lion roars three times. Immediately after the third roar, unpause the Pink Floyd album and turn up the volume to experience what is known as The Dark Side of Oz

As already mentioned, this only lasts as long as the length of the Pink Floyd album (approx.45 mins.) at which point simply enjoy the Wizard of Oz in regular viewing mode. If you dont want to go through all the trouble, a simple google search with the Dark Side of Oz query on google video will do the trick, with the music already dubbed over the movie up to the meeting of the Tin Man as the lingering heart-beats of the Pink Floyd album fades into the background to finish.

Enjoy! It really is quite a treat for those of you who have never tried this before.

I have also heard an interview with Alan Parsons, who engineered the album, in which he dismissed the whole thing as coincidence.

I think Lucas went back and rejigged the print to make it fit the album...

...wouldn't be the first time.

Getting Lucas involved in the film would be amusing - fixing up the flying and explosion shots, and starting a "Glenda shot first" re-edit.
