This is a little far of a connection to magic, however if you have never listened to his genius technique, you are missing out on one great innovative, original, on-air - ventriloquist. It is really funny. A great lesson into being original. Here is a link to Phil. To my knowledge, no one has ever performed this type of format.

I have to agree. Phil Hendrie is one of the funniest people alive (that I know of).

If you're checking him out for the first time, here's the deal - he does every voice on the show, except when listeners call. Unbelievable talent. He does a sort of retention vanish with his voice where you would swear that his characters are talking over one another!

They are talking over one another. That's the magic of pre-recorded bits on the radio.

John

Do you think that some bits are pre-recorded? Maybe, but I am really fooled.

I have tried listening closely and I don't think the spots are prerecorded. I never actually hear both voices at the same time, but the interruptions are so perfect... it's as if the man can think in perfect colloquial conversational rhythms...

Some of the "set-up" topic material is completely outrageous, but that's what reels in the callers. First time I heard that show I was incensed beyond belief... I was totally fooled!

Joe,

Don't feel bad. The program used to be on in Las Vegas a 9 pm, and I would always listen to it before going to sleep, therefore never really heard the entire show......so I was suckered in for about a month.

I should have been more precise: some (probably most) of the "other voices" are pre-recorded. Phil's show is a late-in-the-day version of many of the morning shows. Imus is a prime example of using pre-recorded bits flawlessly.

Many moons ago I produced a small- and medium-market comedy service for radio station morning shows. The more popular bits were the interactive bits which provided spaces for the local talent to fill in. Generally, these bits were practised the afternoon before the show aired.

Phil, quite obviously, needs no one to do his "voices" for him. <g> Knowing how a major radio show is produced and having listened to his show quite a bit, I'm fairly positive he's interacting with digital cuts much of the time.

To me, this doesn't take away from his talent in presenting a unique show. To me, this would simply point to a desire to produce a perfect show that sounds extemporaneous.

Magic.

Hello, Joe.

Oh, I experienced the same as you. The first week or so I caught the show, it was usually mid-stream so I missed the opening. I was familar with shock radio, but this went a bit beyond that. <g>

He is a talent, no dount about that. It's not my brand of humor, but I recognize radio genius when I hear it.

Actually none of the voices are pre-recorded. Hendrie does it all live. Listen carefully and you'll hear that the voices never quite overlap. He's very good at what he does.
