When does copyright end on a book or booklet? For instance is Annemans work still under copyright?

Depends. In the UK it's 70 years after the death of the author.

I think, assuming the work is not "a work for hire," that copyright ends 75 or 95 years after the death of the author. However, in this case, most of the books published by Max Holden's never had their copyright renewed after 26 years (as used to be the law). Thus anything published by Holden's is now in public domain.

Of course, one has to verify it was never renewed, which is possible but not always easy.
