I work part time as a college lecturer, but over the past years I have done close up magic many "friends" weddings and parties. Even appearing (for 5 seconds) on TV. I am now being asked to do paid gigs, weddings parties etc. This is great as I want to start working semi-professionally, but where do I start?
Obviously I will need insurance (reading the other post).
But where from? What kind? How much?
Do I need to tell the tax man?
Do I need an accountant?
Where can I get advice on contacts and bookings?
I tried talking to equity, but they wont give me insurance (or even talk to me) unless I am already working as a pro (catch 22).
Im sure there are lots of starting out magicians like me who want to make a few quid, but do it legally and safely. But there doesnt seem to be much help available.
Where can I get some good honest advice on what to do to get started, without incurring the wrath of the tax man, or being sued when I set fire to the brides wedding dress.
Dave. :)
Starting out
Re: Starting out
There is so much to cover, you should 1) get a book or two on the business of magic 2)Go ask these questions at your local magic shop.
