Why all the gimmicks?

Postby dazm123 » June 27th, 2015, 6:08 pm

Hello everyone,
This is my first post on here so please be gentle!
When I look around now all I see are stealth assasin wallets, peek wallets and a whole host of gimmicks for the mentalist. They must have really big pockets when they leave home! Makes me wonder what they do on a hot sunny day when tbey go out.

My point is this. Look at the true mentalists of our era, Derren Brown, David Berglas would they need all this stuff?

In 13 steps the last couple of chapters of Corindas book push towards having nothing with you to perform true mentalism.

What happens if you forget that wallet? Or god forbid its stolen? Oh no you will have to borrow a few pieces of paper and...oh craps I forgot how to do that!

In my humble opinion forget the gimmicks because thats all they are. Concentrate on performing a real miracle with only things you can borrow. You dont have to carry anything with you then.

Thanks for reading/posting.

Explain what you mean by "true mentalist".

Mentalists who have a certain notoriety who have led and influenced the field of mentalism with vision and inspired a whole generation. If that makes sense.

Are you suggesting there are too many tools available to the craftsman?

To me it matters not how many gimmicks might be in use. If the performer pulls out a notepad that he/she writes on, I quit watching.

dazm123:

It sounds like you might enjoy Max Maven's "Nothing" DVD set and Jim Steinmeyer's "Nothing but Mystery" book. (Although Mr. Steinmeyer would quickly challenge the notion that having lots of props is a bad thing.)

Dealers have got to have something to sell.

Your question could not have been better answered.

I will also add that there is more [censored] in the magic world these days relating to mentalism than you'll find in a barn of 100 cows. Armchair dreamers claiming to be professional entertainers giving high priced workshops, selling high priced half-baked ideas, who have never stood in front of a paying audience.
