I Know the Secret of the Berglas Effect!
Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
What I loved about magicboy's posts was that he tried to argue with our our Chief Genii, when is was magic public knowledge that Richard was writing the book The Berglas Effect.
The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything.

He made Mark Lewis look like a sane and rational human. :)
Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
I think he was basically looking to scam/con magicians, doesn't he understand we con people all the time, but we do it for enchantment and their enjoyment not to rip them off.

Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
How many years have you been performing the trick?
How many times in a working engagment do you perform the trick? (once a night, a showpiece? suitable for walkaround performer?)
How reliable are the methods used - ie how many times out of a hundered performances do you need to shift your focus of attention from your audience to any matters of technical importance to the methodolgoy of your trick?

He is a bad example of us Italian Magicians. If he can be called a magician too, he is just good at editing videos. He is just stupid to say the least. Ah..thinking that Slydini, Paul Rosini and Scarne had Italian origins it's a shame that now there is an individual like him.

It has nothing to do with his nationality. He's just a bad magician, that's all.

Very bad to say the least. His nationality doesn't count, but he gives us a bad image.

I don't think he gives all Italians a bad image. Just himself.

If you want to know the real secret of The Berglas Effect, we are reprinting the book, The Berglas Effects, and for $125 US ($140 outside US) postpaid, you can buy the book and 3 DVDs and see how David really does it instead of all this silly bullsh*t.

So, it hasn't been revealed in this thread? I guess that explains the tepid reactions I've been getting.

Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
I've been fascinated by this Berglas Effect, I practice magic illusions, mostly card tricks but I am a complete beginner. Like Justin Miller and Ellusionist team works and David Blaine, Dynamo, you know... street performers.
But i bet most of tv nowadays it's involving some editing work and pre show (think about Criss Angel).
I had some lectures and watched some performances of the Berglas Effect recently, especially I got impressed by Lu Chen and Daniel Prado versions you find on Youtube.
I've watched the only video of David Berglas performing the number on tv but I can clearly see is giving a quick glimpse at cards and cutting them, like some sort of si stebbins quick calculation to adjust the order of the named card+number.
Now, I don't trust in miracles and of course I don't know the real method behind the perfect effect, but if you exclude gimmicks, memorized decks, some kind of psicological force with handlings, stories, images (very hard to get I think) the only thing I can think of it's something like a finger card move by the dealer (who is in fact a stooge).
Many of you may know the real trick behind, to me at the moment the Lu Chen version remains a mistery if you exclude all you can think of...
I personally think the Patrick Redford and Justin Miller versions are really good to perform, but would be fascinating to make with a shuffled deck without touching the cards.
I know also about the "third eye" version and the gimmick behind it but I think it's kinda predictable...

Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
Thank you for resurrecting the most hilarious thread I've seen here, or anywhere. It was before my time and I'm glad I got to experience it. Bill Malone was asked during his EMC appearance how do people become funny. I think it primarily develops from life experiences and mrgoat has it in spades. That was epic, sir.
If Jim Steinmeyer ever runs out of material and decides to write the history of the Genii forum then this is in the top 10 for sure. I'm just out of hospital and laughing hurts, but it was so worth it.
Dale Cooperfield, your decision to post comments about the Berglas Effect here is very suspicious since there are other threads that offer a more rational discussion. Either you didn't look very hard to find a place to make your remarks, or this single comment of yours (and your broken English) mean that you can't help returning every few years like some bad infection.

What are you talking about, your mind is really poor if you think I'm Stefano Nobile. Oh, btw, his new videos on youtube are quite remarkable about Berglas Effect. No, I'm not him. I'm italian too and I've seen good reviews of guys who bought that effect from him.
Of course I'm not buying anything from you magicians, because all I need I already got for free. Be wise in life!

Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
I'm not exactly sure when all the interest developed in the Berglas Effect and the popularity of what is now known as ACAAN, new versions going out weekly. I'd say it is within the last twenty years that it has become mainstream.
The recent developments leave me somewhat cold because of something I experienced in 1978.
I knew the name David Berglas aged 8 or 9 because my grandmother gave me a David Berglas magic set for Christmas. The first time I saw him was at the Brighton British Ring convention in 1976. Again at the Hastings 1978 convention. Not sure at which I saw him perform his ESPocology routine which fooled me to the core. It caused me many sleepless nights thinking about the impossibility of what I'd experienced. Years later, when he revealed the method, I realised I'd been fooled by something very simple, and had my mind warped by his ability to get multiple climaxes with no extra work. (The ability to get multiple climaxes from little or no extra work appears in a number of David's routines, and in my opinion is the real Berglas Effect).
Back to the card at any number.
It's about 2.30am in the HQ hotel and David is performing around the billiard's table. He's borrowing decks from the magicians and doing various think of a card routines and other miracles. It was all amazing.
So David is performing away, and then asks someone to call out a card and someone else a number. He got all the magicians who had a deck of cards on the table's edge to pick up their deck and count down. The card was at that number in each deck.
It didn't impress me any more than any of the other things I'd seen him do, because they had fried my mind, and this was - to me- just another egg on the pan.
I didn't think much more about it until years later when it started being discussed online and at conventions. I just recalled my experience at Hastings and wondered why magicians were so impressed with one deck when I'd seen it done with fourteen.

Re: I KNOW THE SECRET "THE BERGLAS EFFECT"!!!
I have never been overly excited about the trick anyway. It is a good card trick but there are hundreds of good card tricks. I have never quite figured out what on earth I am supposed to get excited about. I suppose magicians like solving puzzles. I am different. I don't know how many tricks are done and what is more I don't CARE how they are done either!
Besides I have a low attention span for watching magic and this particular trick tends to challenge that. After 30 seconds or so my eyes glaze over and I can never follow the effect of half of these things.
Oddly enough I am actually a major fan of David Berglas. Still, I prefer the trick I saw him do when I was 16 years old in the house of Lord Greville Janner (although he wasn't a Lord at the time). I swear that I must be the only magician that has ever seen him do it although of course I can't possibly be. It is just that I have never seen or heard of a magician ever mentioning seeing him doing it. All they want to talk about is that daft card at any number thing for some most peculiar reason. No, this trick I saw him do was much better!
The light in the room started to flicker and then went out. Everyone thought that a fuse had gone. David started to feel the wall as if he knew where the electrical fault was. I had no idea he was doing a trick. I thought he had some electrical engineering knowledge or something. Then he suddenly slapped the wall saying, "Oh, it is right here". Then the light came on again!
The only place I have seen this trick described is the Bible. A more spectacular version where God simply said, "Let there be light" and the whole world lit up. I would agree that would probably have been better than slapping a living room wall but it was a bit before my time so I didn't see it for myself.
I did hear later that THIS was David's favourite trick! Apparently he does it at parties. Odd that I am the only magician who has ever mentioned seeing him do it.

Mark? Do you ever perform Out of This World? I am just curious what you think of the trick? I am not sure I have seen you discuss it before.

I think it is a wonderful trick. I bet the bloody thing has been exposed on You Tube by now makiing it somewhat less wonderful. Not that anyone here seems to particularly care.

Re: I Know the Secret of the Berglas Effect!
Not to be too picky, but the number was twelve and the named card was tenth from the face of the pack. Also, why the heck would I carry a phone book around to select a number when anyone who would understand this trick would be able to think of a number between 1 and 52 without needing a book to "help" them?
I'm not really a fan of the effect, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but I just looked at the package for Patrick Redford's version which also shows you a pack and asks you to think of a card you see. But in his version the card and ANY freely named number is in a different pack that was sitting on the table, and the spectator can deal the cards onto the table.
I wouldn't do either trick, but to each his own.
