Swann Auction this Fall is Mario Carrandi's Collection

Postby Richard Kaufman » July 28th, 2008, 3:10 pm

The Swann Auction being advertised for this fall is listed as from "the collection of a gentlemen."

The rumor is that the gentlemen in question is Mario Carrandi, who arranged the auction and is also selling part of his personal collection in it.

Should be lots of good stuff there!

I also heard he will be the auctioneer. It should be a good time.

Is that common for a person who has consigned a lot of his own property to also be the auctioneer? Would that be a conflict of interest?

I think it may okay to do. There are aution houses that have their own items up for auction along with the consignor's items.

I don't much about the NY laws, but as long as you have the auctioneer's license and have the auction on tape, it would be ok.

No matter what, Swanns is a class act. They wouldn't take the risk if there was one.

As I understand it, Mario Carrandi is assisting Swann in putting together the catalog, but he is not going to be acting as the auctioneer.

Dear Guys,
Gale Molovinsky here.

Just got back tonight from KY where I spent some time with Mario Carrandi at the Jay Marshall sale.

Here is the deal on the Swann Auction: Since Fechner dropped out for the October auction, Mario was engaged by SWANN TO ASSEMBLE the annual auction. His responsibility is to gather consignments, catalog & prepare estimates. THIS IS NOT A SALE OF "THE CARRANDI COLLECTION"......far from it.....in fact, of the approximate 350 lots gathered, only about a dozen have been personally contributed by Mario (the inventory is essentially completed; principal photography for the catalog starts next week). The bulk of the lots came from one main source who is essentially unknown to the magic collector community... but who has been a long time primo buyer of Mario's. There are also, of course, a few lots from the usual suspicious characters. Mario is not the auctioner; the regular Swann staff (i.e., Nick, George, Gary, et. al) will be. In my viewpoint, Mario is a consultant here, the same as when an attorney engages an expert witness to examine & testify at a trial. I was told there are going to be quite a few unusual pieces from all fields of magic, and of interest to me, especially posters and memorabilia from prominent past (now deceased) performers.

I'm just going on what Mario told me 3 months ago. Maybe things changed since then. It doesn't bother me either way, as long as I get a Houdini fix. ;)

It would only be unethical if it was not disclosed.
