Dai Vernon Tour Info

Postby Zurgery » September 20th, 2023, 10:07 am

Hi,
I am wondering what exact tour this came from?
Also is the same tour as these lecture notes I have?
And the 2 Spinner coins that was sold?
Was there a ticket to it aswell?

I read on the magiccafe that this image was given out at his farewell lecture tour saying "Best Wishes, Dai Vernon 1976" however the one I have reads "Sincerely Yours, Dai Vernon"

So anyone who went to this lecture.
Do you know if this was the case or is it personal written?
Was it still the 1976 tour? As no date added.

Thanks for the help

Sorry, I can't tell you more because I don't have these two lecture notes.

Try to find someone who has them

The lecture notes look like those given out when Vernon did some lectures at Tannen's in the late 1950s or early 1960s. You can see this because the illustrations are by Ed Mishell.
They have nothing to do with the photo, and neither the photo nor lecture notes have anything to do with the Vernon spinning coin.

Thank you,
I appreciate your help.

Do you know what else was given out during his tour?
I have this aswell, it is related to anything?

Also do you think I'll be okay to frame all together or would that be weird?

Is there any where I could find the exact dates?

Roberto Giobbi did a set of lecture notes for his Dai Vernon seminar, that is essentially a book on Vernon. Also well worth getting.

The "Ball Cone and Handkerchief" notes reproduced above were reprinted in the July 1947 issue of Genii, so they are at least that old.

The signed photograghs were sold during the 1976 lecture tour, as were the spinning coins. Vernon pre-signed and dated the photos and then personalized them at the lecture, as can be seen clearly in THIS EXAMPLE.

There were probably many of these photos left over after the tour.
I have one dated 1977.

You can learn all about the spinning coins from THIS VIDEO from Meir Yedid.

In A 2019 THREAD about the 1976 Farewell Tour, Max Maven wrote ...
I do not recall Vernon bringing any sales merchandise; no lecture notes.

There indeed seems to have been no lecture notes made for the Farewell Tour!

That's okay as you can see the actual lecture HERE.

Thanks so much for this info..
However my signed picture says "Sincerely Yours, Dai Vernon" and all the others say "Best Wishes"
Any idea why?

Thanks

If the photo says "Best Wishes" and is dated 1976, then is was most likely sold at a Farewell Tour lecture. You will find that these will also usually be personalized like the one I linked to above and THIS ONE.

The one I have says "Sincerely Dai Vernon" and is dated 1977.

I think yours is probably from 1977 also. Perhaps later, but not much.

I don't know why he would sometimes leave off the date.

HERE is another one that is very similar to yours.

I went to the Farewell Lecture in Boston hosted by Steve Dacri. He turned it into a convention with Irv Weiner, Sid Radner, and Walter Gibson. I believe this was most likely the same convention Max was at, because of his mention of Walter Gibson. They had a stack of photos and asked that people just take one, and the spinning coins were for sale.

Great, thank
Was the Farewell lecture tour only in 1976?
And the coins were only sold in that tour?

As to the duration of the tour, I don't know. I believe that he did do occasional lectures afterward. Not sure if the coins were something special for the tour, or something that was more available.

At least one such video is on YouTube.
