Professor Hoffmann and "Modern Magic"

Postby Tom Sawyer » December 6th, 2014, 7:19 pm

Hi All,

Those interested in “what Professor Hoffmann’s references were” in the writing of Modern Magic (which he basically wrote during the period 1872-1876) might want to check out the following link:

http://lccn.loc.gov/34018843

It’s a link to an entry (which I just now ran across) for a German book in the Library of Congress. The book was apparently owned by Angelo Lewis. A couple of dates, which apparently place the book into the correct period, are stated in the entry.

However, it appears that the book listed was not the first edition. The Library of Congress entry indicates that certain material had been omitted.

The following link appears to offer for sale an 1861 edition:

I gather that a digitized 1834 edition is included on the German-language version of Google Books:

It is known that Hoffmann relied on a number of works in the writing of Modern Magic, but I do not believe I have seen this one mentioned before. (Of course, Hoffmann also relied things other than books!)
