Astonishing.

Here is a link to a longer clip with more images:

I would appreciate it if somebody could put together a video using these images over the song "The Caves of Altamira" by Steely Dan:

Before the Fall
When they wrote it on the wall
And there wasn't even any Hollywood
They heard the call
And they wrote it on the wall
For you and me -
We understood.

Those caves have been closed to the public for a number of years now. When they were first opened to tourists and scholars in 1948, the paintings inside started deteriorating at a rapid pace within seven years. The caves had been sealed from human carbon dioxide for over 17,000 years, which kept them in pristine condition.

The French government built an adjacent cave that is an exact replica of the original Lascaux caves for visitors. If you visit the caves now, you're looking at fakes.

Are these the caves Werner Herzog filmed?

Herzog filmed inside the Chauvet caves of southern France. He was given exclusive access to film in there. The Chauvet cave drawings are roughly 30,000 years old. Twice as old as the Lascaux cave drawings. Here's a link to more info:

The cave drawings from O'Hare's link look to me like the Lascaux drawings.
