You could start with Hofzinser in the 1850s.

Thank you Mr. Kaufman. The Problem with the book of Hofsinzer is that its age of print is 1909-1910. The First time in print ive found the efect is in 1868 in Robert Houdins book (Sympathetic Cards). But im looking for earliers references, i dont have read the books of Ponsin, Mieg... and i dont have them so if anyone knows any earlier reference and can help me it will be great, im also interested in other references of that effect in the books of 19 century (Sachs, Hoffman, Roterberg...)
Thank you very much, and excuse me for my English.

Ponsin's 1853 book, at least my copy of the Sharpe edition, offers no card matching routine. A quick look in Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft shows divinations and predictions yet no explicit matching of a shown card with a subsequent selection even if the componant means of doing so are described.

That's not a "problem" with Hofzinser's book: he performed those routines in the 1850s and was long dead by the time the book came out. What's wrong with using the date he performed them? Why does it have to be published?

Sorry about the word "problem" Im from Madrid and my English is not as good as my spanish, sure there is a word that expresses better what i wanted to say.

Its Just a work for the Escorial Ive to speak about the coincidence effect, and sure im gonna speak about hofzinser and that he performed in 1850 but I also want to know and to share when the effect was first published and who was the creator (i think this last thing its impossible).

Thank you Richard and Thank you Jonathan
I aprecciate your help

It would be helpful to know what trick you mean. Are you referring to Herbert Milton's effect known as "The Sympathetic Clubs"?

What do you think about that :

"Faire qu'une personne choisisse dans un jeu une carte semblable celle qui a t tire d'un autre jeu."

Make that a person chooses in one deck a card similar to another one which was taken from another deck.

In Nouvelles Rcrations mathmatiques et physiques by Gilles-Edme Guyot in 1769.

Thanks :) One could pretty much do the card match (27th trick) from a fifty two card pack after dividing it in halves.

With pseudo mates ?

If the first spectator "chooses" the King of Heart, the second spectateur "finds" the King of Diamond ?

Pourquoi pas !

Thanks, it seemed less trouble than carrying two packs of cards and may permit other tricks if the volunteers are amenable.
