Whenever visiting Chicago in the 80's I always took the time to meet my friend Tony Andruzzi, aka Tom Palmer, Masklyn ye Mage for a few hours and more than a few drinks. We talked about Chicago, magic, magick, magicians and also sometimes Jack Ruby. Great times, now long gone.
A few days ago I looked through a lot of correspondence and attached to a letter from Tom was the "Masklyn laws of magick". They are pretty funny and reflects the thoughts and acid tongue of Tom's. I do not think that these have been published before so may be they might be of some interest. Here goes:
MASKLYN'S LAW OF MAGICK.
1. The secret of success in Magick is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made.
2. Practise is its own punishment.
3. If at first the trick doesn't work, you probably bought it from Tannen's.
4. Any effect is possible if you don't know what you're talking about.
5. Magicians don't copy each other. It's just that they all own Zig-Zag illusions.
6. The day you'd sell your soul for a good mental effect, souls are a glut.
7. If the effect fits your style, it's probably not good for your image.
8. All magicians lie, but it makes no difference, since no one listens.
9. For every miracle, there's an equal and opposite criticism.
10. Never attribute to plagiarism that which is adequately explained by thievery.
11. If the effect really wows them, you're not doing it according to the instructions.
12. If your act doesn't sell, you've stolen the wrong act.
13. A magician's credibility is inverse proportion to the number of sequins on his suit.
14. As long as you don't have to prove it, your method is the better one.
15. You're probably making twice as much as any unemployed magician.
