"Red Magic"

Postby George Olson » December 26th, 2002, 5:26 pm

A friend brought a "book" (actually a Binder)with a year of "The Red Magic Section" edited by none other than Harry Houdini! It is actually printed in red ink, Tabloid size, 4 pages. Dated 12-28-1924 through 11-1925.

It was a supplement to the Portland Oregonian newspaper.

He walked into an antique store, and as he was asking the proprietor if she had any "magic" stuff he pulled this ledger style binder off a shelf, she said no she didn't think so, and he opened the book and that's the rest of the story.

Anybody got any ideas about this interesting bit of magic memorabilia?

George

Please ask your friend to donate it to the Genii Archive.
Don't send it to Pete: he'll use it to line a bird cage.
I think it's worth some pretty hefty bucks!

Hey George,
before you do anything with it I would like to see it. Just cause it sounds neat.
I will be back home in a few days.
cheers.

I did a Google search, and found a single issue July '28 for $19.00 from the Times-Picayune (sp).

As an active collector of Houdini memorabilia, I have picked these up from time to time for anywhere from $10 - $20 an issue - and I think I have occasionally seen them go for more on ebay (although that is not always the most accurate indicator of value). Certainly a run of them is more desirable than isolated issues, although if they have holes punched in them (for a binder?), that might reduce their value......
They are not uncommon, as many newspapers ran them, but they are, nevertheless, collectible.
