Printing from Recent Issue

Postby Jon Elion » July 3rd, 2017, 10:32 am

What is the status of printing from a recent issue? Searching the forum, I have seen several status reports, but uncertain what should be possible.

I am trying to print 2 pages from August 2016 to PDF on Windows 10 using Chrome browser. I got to the issue from the main page of the magazine using the "Issues" button on the top navigation bar. The resulting navigation bar on the right has "hover help" or "tool tips" if the mouse cursor hovers over an icon. Hovering over the Contents icon shows: View/print/email/download complete articles in several formats. View index of the edition. The first sentence is not implemented or possible. Hovering over the Pages icon shows: View thumbnail images of all pages in the publication. Download pages as PDF files. The first sentence works, there is not such functionality for the second sentence.

Clicking with the magnifying glass icon on a page produces four icons in the upper right corner, the first one of shows: Print, email or download selected content. Aha! Progress! That produces the familiar single-page screen to select the rectangular region of interest to be downloaded. Clicking the Download/Print finally downloads a PDF file. Alas, that file is 0 bytes long and useless.

I tried getting to old issues via the Issues icon on the right-hand navigation bar, but that went nowhere except to show "Waiting for geniimagazin.dc.newsmemory.com..." forever, and never did fill up with back issues to choose from.

Is this a known situation that is being worked on? Ignored? Is there simply no way to convert pages from a recent edition to PDF? Something else I should be doing instead?

Help!

Thanks for the note: the "Print" button seems to have vanished from the tool bar! Since it's July 3, it will take some days to get it fixed.

I was able to make it work this way.

First, get to the page with the thumbnails for every page in the issue.
Select a page to print (I'll use p 75, the portrait of Derek DelGaudio, as an example). Click it once, and you should get a screen where p 75 is on the left, and the table of contents of the issue is on the right. OR you should get a screen with the double spread of pp 74 and 75.

Either way, DOUBLE click on p 75 and hopefully you get a magnified image of the page (expanded to fill the screen in width, and the top and bottom are cut off), with a small icon at the top right that has a circle containing an "is less than" symbol. Hover over that icon, and it should say "Print, email or download selected content."
Click that icon. You get a box with the page on the left, and another box with a small box that says "Download/Print" and instructions below it.
Click the "Download/Print" box and it should download a PDF of the page, which you can print at your leisure.

Well, I got it working (but the icon/hover help issue persists).

It all seems to hinge on how one gets to the issue. Getting there directly (as a recent issue) means that printing simply won't work (even though it looks okay, as Bill's instructions suggest). The PDF that gets downloaded is empty.

I started by getting into any issue, then selected Issues from the vertical navigation bar on the right. This was not working when I wrote my initial post, but it is working now. This enabled me to select the issue I was interested in (August, 2016) and opened it that way.

NOW the print function works AND the resulting PDF file is correct.

Phew!

When you are in Flip Mode, hover your cursor over a page and you will see that the text becomes highlighted. Click on it and an enlarged version of the page will open in a new window. There are two buttons in the upper right corner: the upper button which is a "<" sign is the correct button. Click on it and you will be given the options to print or download that page.

Can the full page be selected easily and automatically?
I find it quite tricky to play around with the elusive expanding/shrinking selection rectangle.
Have I missed something?

You have to drag the rectangle open to encompass the entire page to download or print it.

Is it possible to download/print more than one page at a time? If so, how might one do that? Thanks!!

It's one page at a time.

Some pages download fine for me, some download as blank PDFs. Yesterday I tried to download Cardopolis, Genii September 2016, pages 26 & 27. I just got a blank PDF.
BTW, David Britland’s method for keying the packet is inspired.

If my post seems odd, the new post I was replying to was removed. But check out David's 'Thoughts on Hummer's Monty' anyway. Combined with Hummer's handling for the "wise acre" and you have a hands-off killer.

I can corroborate this. All pages I tried to print from Sep 2016 resulted in blank PDFs (813 bytes each).

Nearby issues yielded varying results:

2015 Aug: ok
2015 Sep: all blanks
2015 Oct-Dec: ok
2016 Jan-Sep: all blanks
2016 Oct: ok

I'm using Chrome on Linux.

With my computer I use Firefox and I have no problem with Genii.

With Magic, it's more complicate because each page is scanned in several pieces.

I try to explain:

If you double click on a page, normally all the page appears on the right and you can print or download it.

With Genii, it's OK but not with Magic: columns are separate and pictures also. So you have to do the job several times to reconstruct a full page.

Voilà ! I hope this help...

Generally, I download two or three maximum (magicana), not the full magazine. I don't know if there is limitation.

Philippe, please try printing any pages from Genii, Sept 2016.

I am now using Firefox and Sept 2016 fails for me just the same as Chrome.

I understand what you have said.

If you try to use the window Download/Print, you obtain a blank page.

But if you use the other manner, that is only one click to obtain the same page on the right, then you click the button Toogle to graphic display, then you click to Print, you obtain a new window in which you can choose Download or Print and you have the full page with text and pictures.

I know, it's not easy but it works.

I hope you understand what I explain.

Phillippe, you recommend this method, yes?

Image

This works in most issues. But in 2016 September Genii, it yields a blank PDF.

Can anybody successfully print any pages from 2016 September Genii?

Alternatively access the page on your phone / iPad Genii app and take a screen grab or print screen from your computer and save to a document.

I don’t think I’ve ever downloaded a PDF page from the app.

Yes, but not using that method.

This is the way.

Okay, so we SHOULD print like this, using the printer-in-a-circle icon:

NOT like this, with the share/network icon:

Thank you, Phillippe and Chris.

Richard, here's the bug report:

These issues print or fail as indicated when printing via the share/network icon in screenshot #2 above:

2015 Aug: ok
2015 Sep: all blanks
2015 Oct-Dec: ok
2016 Jan-Sep: all blanks
2016 Oct: ok

I have never printed directly from the page. Always downloaded as a pdf and then printed the pdf. Never had any problems.

Have you tried what Quentin wrote in the message above yours? Download the pdf and then print it out. I have always done it that way.

I've downloaded two pdfs as mentioned above from the September 2015 issue (in the way I always do). Both were blank when I opened them.

Certain issues don't allow printing on most pages, I've seen this in the following ones:

September 2015
April 2017
August 2017
September 2017
October 2017
December 2017

Probably happens to other, but if these could be fixed it would be awesome!

The problem with the 2017 issues is fixed! That's great!. I still have a problem with September 2015, for me now it is worse because I can't even normally access to the September 2015 issue with the online viewer :(

Just tried it myself. Being signed in, then clicking on the September 2015 issue, I was asked to insert my email, then received this message:
