App for android tablets
Re: App for android tablets
Well, that was fast. Just a little while ago my tablet informed me of some software updates available...and one was the Genii app.
I've tried it out, and the new version is MUCH better than the previous one.
- It runs fast and very smoothly.
- No need to double-tap on the screen to zoom in, just use the expanding pinch motion. Zoom out (pinch closed) and flick to go to the next page.
- Flip the tablet vertically or horizontally, the app deals with it just fine.
- Videos are now supported inside the app, instead of launching a different piece of software. They can be viewed nearly full-screen if the tablet is horizontal.
- No crashes so far! (They seem to have fixed the memory leak.)
Once you get enough feedback from other Android users here, you can let people know in your next column that the latest app is much better.

Just upgraded and it's a huge improvement. I notice that the videos open at a small size, but can be expanded to fill nearly the full screen.
Very nice update.

Re: App for android tablets
I'm not able to tell what version I'm using but is anyone else having a problem with getting the newest issues to appear in the list?
I am having to uninstall and reinstall for it to show up. (I imagine that I have the latest version of the app since I've uninstalled/reinstalled for both of the most recent issues to display.)
Just checking if there is a fix or if I'm doing something incorrectly.
Thanks

Re: App for android tablets
This has apparently been a problem for a few months, but we just found out about it. We have raised the issue with the company who handles this for us and they're investigating. You should not have to delete and reinstall the app every month just to see a new issue, but that is currently the case with the Android app.

I just got a notice from amazon thanking me for submitting my app, so I think the company that provides the service for us has updated the app for Android tablets and Kindle devices.
I'd be grateful to hear if you have problems in the future.

I just sent this message to Genii....
to Margret
I keep writing to you because I enjoyed the digital Genii extras on my XP machine trouble free for a few issues..."loading asset libraries" is all I get these days... (the old (pre-digital)issues on Ask Alexander seem ok...
I tried downloading the kindle app to my Kindle Fire...the screen turns milky white and nothing else happens.
Also, is it true that all digital issues of Genii (except the current one) will be unavailable for 2 years?

Re: App for android tablets
Delete the apps and reload.
All issues of Genii are available. For issues more recent than the simple pdfs in Ask Alexander (which stop two years ago) look in the archive folder--but when you launch the app they should be readily visible on the screen going back to January 2010.
Make sure that your machine does not go to sleep while you are downloading either the app or any issues and that you have a strong wireless connection.

Re: App for android tablets
Hi.
I'm newbi with Android and it produce me headaches
I have a Sony Xperia U with Android 2.3.7 and can't be updated.
I tried to read iGenii. If I use the internet navigator provided with the phone I can hear the audio but not watch the videos. I can read some pages but others appears as a lost image.
Then I remembered there is an app. I dowloaded it but crashes a lot and takes so many time to download an issue. It asks me if I want to download the media content. I read in another post that there is no more that option and now is mandatory to download media. So maybe my phone is using an old iGenii app version.
With this version I can listen and watch the media, if I stop the media and return to the content list is ok but if I reach the end of the video (or audio) the app crashes and ask to force the exit.
I can read only in the "plain text" version, if I tap on the icon I think must show the graphic version I only see a black screen.
Any idea what happens?
thanks

Re: App for android tablets
It's not necessary to download the media files to watch them from the Genii app as long as one has a current wifi connection. They stream just fine for me whether or not I've actually downloaded an issue (any of it).
Re: App for android tablets
I've accessed the digital issues prior only on a pc and just got a Kindle Fire. Trying to play catch up and I may have misssed the info but should I be able to use the app now? It does not seem to recogonize my passowrd/code combo. No incorrect password message--just nothing. I tried deleating and re-installing but no change. Any techies out there that can assist?

Yes, I think you should be able to.
Did you confirm you can still access the latest digital issue on your PC and that you are using the same AskAlexander username?

Re: App for android tablets
You shouldn't have to do that, however there are so many different types of machines running so many different versions of Android software that my guess is that the company we are currently using hasn't developed an app that plays well with all of them. I really don't know.
We will be switching to a new company with new apps in the coming months and hopefull that will solve your problem. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: App for android tablets
I don't think it's a question of new or old, however I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to hear that the newer versions of the operating system are causing the problem. Our app isn't updated nearly as often as it should be (a situation beyond my control at the moment).

Re: App for android tablets
Hello there,
I'm using Nexus 7 first edition, and using the Genii app.
It works pretty well before, but a few days ago it starts showing the apparently Account page on Genii website. Everytime I tried to open an issue, it just pop up the Account page. Even when I close it, the magazine would not load at all.
I even try to click on View order on that very same page, but it returns with error "Token Authentication Error"
If I turn off the network, I can still access the offline magazine I previously downloaded.
Please advise..
Thank you

Uninstall the old app and install the new one (tecnavia). But be warned that the new app has lots of issues that will hopefully be fixed soon when they release an update.

I already used the new apps by technavia. I've thought of uninstalling the apps and reinstall it again, but I'm afraid that the downloaded issue will also be deleted from my tablet (means I have to download it all over again)

Re: App for android tablets
I've honestly stopped trying to use the current Android app as it's so buggy that it makes me want to fling my tablet against the wall.
I have high hopes that the newest revision (coming soon I hope) will fix some of that.

arioaditya, delete the app and reload it. Log in.
Yes, the current issue you've downloaded will go away, but you can download it again.
I'm told that the update should happen by the end of August.

Re: App for android tablets
I own a Kindle HDX. Up until about the June issue the iGenie was perfect. I could read my issue no problem on the Kindle. Then around July a new version of the software appeared and point blank refuses to load onto the Kindle HDX. Gets to 91% and fails to load. Now the old version refuses to download the magazines from my subscriptions. This is extremely annoying as the Kindle is a book reader and I should be able to do this. I don't like sitting at my iMac computer reading magazines.
If this is not rectified I will have to reluctantly terminate my membership. Anybody with same problem?

You are using the old app from a company we no longer use.
Delete it and find the new app, then download it and enter your user name and password. Should work fine.

OK, I could have sworn that I had the back issues displaying up to the 50's and then the latest ones. Now I only have going back to 1967, I think. Not sure what happened to the earlier ones. I cleared my cache but it didn't help. Anything going on or any suggestions? Thanks.

All issues from 1936 to 1988, and from 2010 to 2014 are up. So, I'm not sure what is causing your problem. You might try deleting and reloading the app.

Re: App for android tablets
I believe I'm usng the current Genii App (Android) and I'm also not seeing any issues older than '67.
I wonder if there's been any movement on an updated app in terms of usability? It's frustrating to see all those great issues available but not be able to enjoy (or properly search) them due to the slow/jittery/unresponsive interface of the current android app.

Re: App for android tablets
Thanks, Chris. I'll let the company know that no issues past 1967 are showing up.
They are still working on the Android app which I tested a few months ago. It worked great for me, but because there are so may different types of devices and stuff on which an Android app has to work, it is (from what they tell me) more difficult to get right than an iOS app.

All back issues should now be up for the Android App. Good news 1.
Better news: on Monday or Tuesday I will test a new version of the app and as soon as I give approval, the company will release the upgrade. This is only an interim step toward an even better version of the app which should be released in November.
