Tenkai Matsuura - R.I.P.

Postby Y\'s-guy » February 8th, 2008, 8:18 am

All :
It seems no Japanese magicians here and No one mention this sad news still now. So I'll report this sad news.

Sorry to report Tenkai Matsuura (Stage name of Yasunaga Matsuura : a.k.a. "Tenkai Jr.") passed away on Sunday the 27th of January 2008. He was 72.
I don't know how many people know him in person, but our cheif Genii wrote about him in MAGIC :

"Tenkai's huge legacy, a good deal of which is unknown in America, has been left in the care of his student (who was given the name of his teacher) Tenkai Matsuura. Matsuura's task is formidable in that he must sort through thousands of pages of notes which his teacher left behind and, with Ton Onosaka acting as translator, demonstrate the tricks to me in such a way that all of Tenkai's subtle thoughts are clearly conveyed. " (MAGIC, March 1994)

He was famous in Japanese magic and you can find his works on old Genii and MAGIC.

Sincerely,
Y

Thank you for sharing that information. I understand the Tenkai book is scheduled for an updated/re-release. I can't remember where I read that...

I'm writing a completely new Tenkai book.

The first one, done by Kosky and Furst (I think--am in Japan at the moment and can't check) is awful.

Thanks for the information Richard. I wonder if Mr. Matsuura departed like Dr. Daly...

Ton Onosaka was his room mate at the convention.

Ton told me that Matsuura went downstairs in the morning to the hot spring in the hotel (many Japanese hotels are built on top of natural hot springs and they have pools in the basement).

Anyway, he had a cerebral hemorage or a stroke (not certain which) while down in the hot spring.

He lived in Nagoya.
Many magicians had admired Ishida Tenkai and followed his spirit and style significantly. I am among them. Yasunaga Matsuura had taken care of later life of Tenkai and his wife Okinu who also lived in Nagoya. So, Tenkai gave his stage name "Tenkai" to Matsuura, however, I believe Matsuura's style of magic is different from that of Tenkai Ishida possibly because of his character.
