Harry Anderson / Jon Racherbaumer et al info?

I was just wondering how Harry Anderson and his wife are doing. I hope his shop and brand new theater have weathered the storm as best as possible.

Anyone have any info?

I just spoke with a friend of a friend (etc.) who has not yet heard from Harry Anderson or Jon Racherbaumer. I was just looking at CNN and they are reporting that the French Quarter is knee-deep in water. Not good news.

Trini Montes just called me from Dallas and reported that he is OK and that Jon Racherbaumer was safe in Natchez, Mississippi with Jessica. Tom Ladshaw and Lee Fried also got out, as did Irvin Royes. No word yet on Doug Conn, Harry Anderson, Gary Hughes and Joel Ray.

Please pray for Doug Conn and his wonderful family.
Doug has been my best friend for a long time and as I was leaving New Orleans for Texas he and his family decided to stay. I know that he lives in an area that is above sea level, but I have not heard from him since the Huricane hit as the phone lines have been down.
Most reports say that the area where Doug lives is not one of the devistated areas that you are all seeing on televison and Doug is a Smart guy. I'm sure he is fine but please keep the New Orleans magi in your prayers.

Barrie and Janie left today for a lecture tour of the Northwest (Vancouver, Seattle...). They are fine. Shreveport is about as far from New Orleans as you can get and still be in Louisiana... They were concerned about Jon R. as they had been trying to reach him by phone and email and had not been able to reach him...

Just off the phone with Mike Caveney, one of Harry's pals... Mike called but only got answering machine. Hope is that Harry left town and got most of his STUFF to the upper floors.

But we don't know.

I saw this over on the Magic Cafe, posted by someone who was in contact with a friend of Harry's:

"Harry and Elizabeth stayed in New Orleans until this morning. (8/31) They weathered the storm and the aftermath pretty well with no significant damage to the club or the shop. When his friend, a fireman, was told to evacuate the city, Harry decided it was time to go. He is fine. He will have great routines and stories from this adventure I am sure."

Many of you know Earle and Gladys Christenberry. Here is an email from Earle that he posted to the IBM Exec. Secretary. I am sure Earle would appreciate at least an email message:

Dear Darleen:

We left home Saturday with $150 in my pocket plus credit cards. My daughter had gotten a reservation for me in Hazelhurst, Ms at a motel. Well,that was an experience. The electricity went off Sunday afternoon - no gas, no food. All the restaurants in the area were fast food places and used electricity. There was no ice either.

Hazelhurst is just across the Ms line about 35 miles south of Jackson. The hurricane hit us Tuesday morning. We spent the day watching the shingles blow off and parts of the roof. The rain blew the rain under the door and we had water half way across the room. The next day the water pressure dropped very low and no water would flow into the toilet tank so you couldn't flush. With no electricity, no food, no water we left and drove all the way across MS with no electricity. When we got into Georgia I was able to get gas, phoned my son in Atlanta and we finally got there that night.

So, we're safe staying with my son for, it looks like, at least a month. We left home figuring we'd be back in about three days with no check books or anything except with this new laptop - two changes of clothes and just enough medicine for Gladys (10 Rx) until Friday. Just returned from the drug store and they're now filling all our prescriptions, 10 for Gladys and 6 for me.

We're safe but devistated. As far as I can learn our home is flooded, possibly to the roof - everything lost - all magic, books, valuable financial files - everything.

Doug Conn here.

My family and I are alive and doing okay. Things could be... much much worse (God bless those that are still there... it's truly hell on earth.)

We weathered the storm and escaped yesterday (Wed the 31st.)

Must be brief (lots of emails to answer, etc.)

I'll post some details later.

Was very concerned after hearing you had initally stayed and am really glad to hear that you and your family are ok.

Word from Harry Anderson is that he and Elizabeth stayed in New Orleans during the storm. They are OK and, amazingly, so is his shop and Oswald's, his new night club. At least in comparison to the pictures of the rest of the city that we are seeing on TV. They left town the next day and are now in Austin.

They have no way to get in touch with the outside world but they are fine.

I'm a reporter and I was in the French Quarter yesterday. Oswald's is still standing and according to a guy named Steve who I think manages the place they were planning to show a film there this weekend. There are a lot of people still in the Quarter who don't plan to leave including a guy named Dave who gave us a horse and buggy ride when we were stranded in the warehouse district. You can't kill the spirit of that town.

I hope to see Jon R this Saturday in Shreveport. Just heard from Joel Ray who says his town of Slidell looks like an atomic bomb hit it. He lost everything except the car he left with and the clothes he had on. He hopes to rebuild his 1,000 book magic library once circumstances and income permit... Tom Ladshaw, Lee Freed, Harry Anderson, Gary Hughes, Trini Montes, Joe and Lisa Harrison, Irwin Royes, and Earle Christenberry have all been accounted for. All displaced at the moment, and most uncertain when they can return and what they'll find there when they do. Ralph Fountain (brother of Pete Fountain) was at the Paul Hallas lecture in Houston last night and celebrated a birthday (I believe his 82nd). I am not aware of any loss of life in the magic community, thank goodness, though significant loss of property and income is common.

Got an email from Earle Christenberry yesterday, he and his wife, along with Dave Bendix are living with a relative away from N.O. and Earle was trying to locate his house via a satellite photo online. Said his son's house was totalled.

On another note, Dean Dill's car was stolen with his dog in it... got the dog back but still no car. A friend loaned him a pickup truck to use until????

Dog is fine and today he got his car back (no details other than a quick email from Dean). The dog... I guess he posted some photos... and some construction workers in the area said they saw the dog wandering around... a little search and Dean found it... I asked Dean if the dog had a collar with I.D., Dean said, "Yes but the dog would scare off a stranger trying to read it."

Anyway all's well that ends well! :)
