David Berglas - International Man of Mystery, Part Two

Postby Scott Wells » January 16th, 2018, 4:12 pm

We conclude our two-part podcast with David Berglas this week with a lively conversation about some topics near and dear to David's heart. First off we chat about his work with the film "Casino Royale" starring Orson Welles, David Niven, Woody Allen and Peter Sellers. This was what got David interested in consulting for the movies plus the beginning of his friendship with Orson Welles. He also talks about some of the people he worked with during this era as well as his friendship with Robert Harbin. He also talks about his "pet project", the Cape Town College of Magic and his "Berglas Awards".

You can watch a couple videos with David, see some photos, read the blog, listen online to the podcast and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/sco ... s-part-two

I first met David Berglas when I was 16 years old. I belonged to a youth club in Whitechapel, London and I used to do shows with a singing group called "The Brady Ramblers". The club was called Brady Boys Club. The Ramblers were led by Greville Janner who later became Lord Janner with a peerage in the British House of Lords. The Ramblers would do their singing and I would do magic. The audiences were varied groups and they were all charity shows and there were quite a few of them.

One day Greville said to me "I think you need to improve your presentation. I will get someone to help you do it" I asked who and he responded "David Berglas" I said, "Do you know him?" and he responded "No, but that doesn't matter". Apparently it didn't because later I was informed that I would meet David at Greville's house for the coaching. As a result of this he and David become lifelong friends. Strange how fate takes a hand in people's lives.

I remember discussing the Billiard Balls trick with David and other stuff I was doing at the time. And of course he did a few tricks himself. His most stunning item which you never read or hear about is that the light flickered and went out. We all thought a fuse had gone. He started feeling the wall as if he was trying to find the spot where the problem was. I had no idea what he was doing and also had no idea he was doing a trick. Suddenly he slapped the wall and the light went on again!

It was a memorable evening and I have never forgotten it.
