Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (December 2017)

Postby Dustin Stinett » December 2nd, 2017, 1:47 am

December … wait, WHAAAAT?!?

December is here and once again we are mere weeks from another year being behind us. We spent the day at the Castle Lunch and it was, as always, excellent. Enjoyed good company with Alan Bursky, Nelson Fu, and (Alan, correct us if we’re wrong) Claire Schwartz. Jonathan and West Pendragon were in the club. Max Maven popped in, the Clairvoyants were in a group at the next table, and many more recognizable folks. Lunch at the Castle is great. It’s just about the only time that folks can wear jeans in the club. Not me. But folks. Lunch is for members and their guests only. The Dante Room is often set up with a (rectangular) “roundtable” where members gather and gossip. Friday Lunch is just one of the perks of membership ... and …

Holiday Week-Long Lunch

During the week of December 18, the Castle will be open for lunch Monday through Friday. Enjoy!

Other Holiday Extensions …

Starting immediately and running to the end of the year, the club will open at 4:45PM, the Cocktail Hour magician, WC Fields Bar magician, and the performers in the Peller Theatre will work all week long (versus the usual Thursday to Sunday). That’s a lot more magic at The Magic Castle for the holidays.

Toys For Tots and the Kids

The United States Marines will be in the club manning the Toys For Tots drop off. You know the rules: new unwrapped gifts. (Consider magic sets!) Donations can be made through December 15.

The annual Kid’s Day is Saturday December 2 in the Inner Circle. Members can bring the kids into the Inner Circle to meet Santa, his elves, see his workshop, make ornaments, stuff Teddy Bears, play in a snow pit (woo-hoo!!!), and more. Starts at 11AM. Brunch reservations are not required.

Members Only

The Members Only Holiday Party takes place on December 5. 7PM to Midnight in the Inner Circle.

We Want Your Blood and Your Ugly Sweater

While mutually exclusive, the annual Ugly Sweater Contest and the Red Cross Blood Drive are both on December 15. Sign up online for the blood drive, so your best bet is to see page 24 of the December newsletter for all the bloody and ugly details.

Schedule Notes

The Castle will be closed for buyouts on …

The evening of December 7: Walk-ins and reservations will NOT be allowed on this night.
The morning/early afternoon of December 10: Walk-ins and reservations will NOT be allowed on this day, however the club WILL be open during the evening hours as normal.

The Magic Castle and the AMA Offices will be closed on Sunday December 24 and Monday December 25 in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The Magic Castle and the AMA Offices will be closed on Monday January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.

Speaking of the New Year …

Dinner reservations for the New Year’s Eve Party (the theme is “The Roaring 20s”) are book solid, however walk-ins will be welcome until the club reaches capacity. CALL AHEAD!!! Better yet, text “CAPACITY” to 99000 to receive messages on capacity (building and parking lot) and other items of note.

Founders Day

The 55 anniversary of the Castle and the AMA is on January 2 (NOT the 3rd as listed on the ad on the back page of Genii … someone at the club messed up there).

The event will start outside in the parking lot at 3PM (we will be parking offsite and shuttled to the club). Steve Valentine will host the ceremony which will feature a tribute to Bill, Irene, and Milt Larsen. We are expecting dignitaries from the City of Los Angeles, Hollywood, Sacramento, and Washington D.C.

The menu will have special items AND prices that go back to 1963. Joe Furlow is planning one of his exceptional parties, which are always events that find their way into Castle lore. Dinner reservations are booking fast (the best we could get two weeks ago was the 8PM sitting), so waste no more time if you plan to attend!
