Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (August 2017)

Postby Dustin Stinett » August 1st, 2017, 11:49 pm

Where Do It Go?

It’s hard to believe that it is August. Tic-toc, tic-toc. Where does the time go?
It’s hard to believe that some people wish it away (“I wish it was Friday …”).
I though MAGIC Live was next week. I’m relieved to know that I still have two weeks-plus to get my (metaphorical) act together, like getting this posted for those of you that actually read it.
I’m seriously considering tossing in an Easter Egg or two just to test you…………

Magic and the NEH

The National Endowment for the Humanities is funding a study being conducted by Professor Jason Leddington (Associate Professor of Philosophy at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania). He will be hosting a Perk for all members on August 8 at 8PM in the Inner Circle in which he will be sharing some of his work, opening the floor for discussion, and requesting input on such questions as, “Why do we enjoy magic?” What kind of experience(s) does magic provoke in the audience?” and more.

A Second Weekend Seminar

Earlier this summer, R. Paul Wilson held one of the AMA’s exclusive Weekend Seminars. A second one is now scheduled for this coming September 16 and 17 with living legend Johnny Thompson. Magician Members only, and this will not be for beginners. $300 gets you the seminar, two continental breakfasts, two lunches (by Executive Chef Jason Sperber), and 12 to 14 hours with Johnny Thompson. See the August newsletter for more details.

Going Gourmet

The popular Gourmet Dinner series continues on August 17 this time with wines from Flora Springs. Chef Jason is planning a special meal to pair with the wines, so cleanse that palate and arrive hungry. Tickets are $90, can be acquired online only, and the password is [see page 17 of the August Academy Newsletter for this information].

Halloween on the Horizon

As fast as time is flying, now is the moment to select your costume and make your reservations for Halloween Week … INVASION! … at The Magic Castle. October 23 through 31, with the Members Only party on 10/25. Costumes are required on 10/25, 27, 28, and 31 (if I go, I will be dressed as an over-worked, under-paid writer/editor). It should be out of this world. (I know: too easy.)

Lecture Notes

The August lineup of lecturers is impressive (and wait until you see September’s!):

August 6 ... David Parr
August 13 ... John Guastaferro
August 20 ... Michael Ammar
August 27 ... John Archer

Jazz’n Things Up

The last of the “Hot Summer Nights” of jazz takes place on August 23 at 7:30PM in the Inner Circle (doors open at 7:00). Free to all members and guests. A special bar menu of munchies and drink specials accompany Sherry Williams, Dave Tull, Joe Bagg, Bruce Forman, Bruce Babad, and Luther Hughes.

Schedule Note

The Magic Castle and the AMA offices will be closed on Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. (I, of course, will be working.)

The (now) annual Swap Meet is scheduled for Saturday, September 9. At this point, I cannot say what the rule will be for non-members, but I will say this (editorial opinion following): since making it difficult to impossible for local magicians who are not AMA members to get into this event, during the last several swap meets, one could shoot a cannon through the place and not hit anyone (hence the removal of the spring swap meet from the schedule). Go back to allowing non-AMA members in—without the necessity of being accompanied by a member. Make sure that they are a member of another organization (IBM, SAM, OC Magic Club, etc.—they must have a card identifying them), or the mailing sleeve from their copy of Genii—all this to keep “civilians” out, which was the problem a few years ago that prompted this backlash against non-members), let them in an hour or even two after the members so members have first crack at the goodies, and, of course, charge non-members a few bucks for admission.

Here is a nifty little piece, penned by a new Magician Member, on his experience during his audition for membership in The Academy of Magical Arts:

That was a nice story--great to see the author's dream come true.

From the article: "I think we've seen enough."

I recall that happening to the guy who in front of me at the audition. I understand why the committee would want to do that given the number of applicants and limited time, but Yikes!--that would have scared the heck out of me, especially if they were keeping a straight face.
