Houdini & Doyle

Postby Dustin Stinett » July 15th, 2016, 12:20 am

Now that I am done watching "Houdini & Doyle" (via God's gift, the DVR), I must say that I am a fan of this show. In other words, it's a guilty pleasure. I enjoy the Houdini character that Michael Weston has created. Cocky to a fault, but with a touch of humanity. I've always enjoyed Stephen Mangan's work ("Episodes" is one of the best television programs on the all-but-useless box). But the fresh air of this show is without any doubt Rebecca Liddiard, who plays constable Adelaide Stratton. What a terrific actress she is, and hers is the character you truly care about in the show.

I don't care about the writers and producers playing fast and loose with the historical facts (that Houdini is single, for example). The writing is good (not exactly inspired, but solid). The various mysteries, the conflicts between Houdini and Doyle's ideologies, and other the character interactions are well done. The overall look of the show is excellent.

So of course, since I like it, it is doomed and will not be renewed.

Thanks, Dustin--I'll check it out!

In case some GF'ers are like me and were somehow completely unaware of this series, here's a link to the episodes:

(Unfortunately, FOX has a sad history of prematurely killing off good shows (e.g., Firefly) )

If interested, I reviewed and fact checked each episode. I've linked to all in my Episode Guide:

I must admit this show really grew on me thanks to the amazing job by the three leads. The back and forth between Doyle & Holes was perfect as was Houdini's cocky demeanor. For a show that played fast and loose with the facts there were times that it surprised me with its accuracy. The most notable of which was when Houdini was drinking milk when having dinner in a pub with the constable--a nice touch.

It was doomed from the start but it was a fun run while it lasted.
Every day is a magical adventure!

A recording of Doyle speaking on Spiritualism:
Part 1
Part 2

Unfortunately, they are only accessible in the EU.

You'd think the British Library would have a little more sense than that. What is a library for other than to disseminate information?
